Dear QBN friends, finally the time as come for you to see my work (in progress).

I have other QBN account connected to my real name, but as you know me better by this username I decided to ask your help with this one.

I'm stuck in this logo development...

    Original logo

A, very good, client wants a new one.
After several propositions client says he loves the old logo and is not sure about the change.

But because the logo is dated he wants something fresh.

I ask: "Why not redesign it?"
    Okay.

    First experiments.

Client likes the 4th approach most. No doted "i".
Client likes the whirl as "O" in "RECORDS"

Client asks, can you please make the name more compact?
    Sure.
And the "N" with all parts the same size?
    Sure.

    I show him the results.
One with the regular N and two different versions the way he asked.

    Client prefers the 3rd option.

After a few attempts client says:
"I don't think the Records work with the whirl in there."
    Okay!
Can you make it separate from "RECORDS"?
    Sure.

    I try I don't like it.
It looks like this with no whirl.

I try again with the whirl but separately from the word RECORDS.

    RECORDS is too small.

    I try differently

    And now?
I'm a bit sucked by the whirl.
I like it a bit more like this.

    What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance for the input!

The name of the label "TINK" is not a typeface.
I draw it from scratch inspired in a mix from Futura, Syntax and Frutiger in a way to make it compact and related to the original logo when it comes to the "K".

    Something like this.

  • d_rek0

Who's designing this logo? The client or you?

    • Good question. Me. It's just the guy's not sure about anything. Not even if he wants a new one.
      ********
    • He questions everything. Than has doubts. Goes back and forth in his opinion.
      ********
    • |He has other label. With no whirl. First wants to keep things separated. Now wants the whirl also in the other logo.
      ********
    • Records from the other label have the logo in the middle of the vinyl. Too confusing
      ********
    • not even he knows what he wants.
      ********
    • Good question but we can't all earn money telling clients to do it our way or fuck off... Not all the time anyway..

Client says my whirl looks like the "Coffee and Company" one.
I made him realize that the original whirl is the one that really looks like the coffee one.

The label was released way before.

  • Beeswax0

Did you try the whirl for the dot of exclamation mark?
Maybe align RECORDS to the left put the whirl instead of the dot but big, overlapping the K.
    I dunno, maybe works.

    • I tried that. Too small.
      ********
    • I mean the whirl than is too small for the purpose and as symbol.
      ********
    • was one of the first approaches.
      ********
  • dbloc0

try using the exclamation point as the i

    • out of question. he really wants the exclamation point in the end. i know what you mean.

    TINKI

  • SoulFly0

You are not redesigning it, you are simplifying it right now. There's a difference.
Your client's logo probably started out with a sketch similar to your version and ended up with what is now.
I gotta say, the swirl is their original logo is really bad. But I think you need to start over.

    • hum, I see. the original logo is from the 80's

Personally, these explorations come off as relatively amatuer in execution: the mish-mash of type, the weird swirl, bad kerning.

The word tink itself is, simply put, far more compelling than any of the solutions you've proposed. Can you get away with a well type-set logotype? The swirl communicates absolutely nothing to me personally.

A clean modern sans-serif that has a sense of style? Futura can be quite fashionable, but not in the way you're using it. I would ditch the other typefaces completely. The K sticks out like a sore thumb and the N looks wrong.

    • swirl = record spinning
      ********
    • This N is not the one I like at all. Totally looks wrong. like condensed. the kerning i understand what you mean.
      ********
    • client doesn't want to spend money on typeface. only type logo is out of question for him.
      ********
    • my association when I listen to vinyl records is not swirling, but robust, rich audiod_rek
    • mish mash of type? like the cpompany's name mixed with the futura?
      ********
    • he says also it can't be just tink because tehre's a lot of tinks nowadays.
      ********
    • sore thumb. i don't know if i cry or laugh.
      ********
    • i like the way you put things. i'm not happy at all. not with myself. not with the logo. not with the direction.

You need to get inspired son:
    http://dribbble.com/search?q=san…

    Start here: http://dribbble.com/search?q=fut…

The type needs way more refinement. If you can drop the swirl then do it, if not find a way to remove it from the wordmark.

    • you can ignore that first linkd_rek
    • thanks!

I don't know about you, but this N makes more sense to me.
    As well the K.
This was the original name i showed them.
    What about the kerning here?

It's weird the way he tells me, reacting to stuff:

"I feel this one much more!"

  • mg330

Albums, you are summoned to the thread.

    • I was thinking the same actually. where's albums when you need him. But d_rek's advice and input is great!
      ********
    • appreciate the fact that he's so frank and straight forward. he could be a teacher.
      ********
    • this sucks and there's no other way to say it. now go home and start all over again. you have 24 hours or you fail!

This is the other logo they want me to work on.
Now you know where TINK! comes from.

So they use it separately, but the editions in this label use the swirl of the other logo.

They first said they wanted the stuff separated and now maybe they want the swirl also in this logo.

Honestly I would drop the swirl.
    I would prefer a fucking gramophone, I don't know.

And I would just use one label.
    But it's not my business.

    They confuse themselves with this.

    • What a stupid thing to tell a kid
      ********
    • i took it from the movie Casablanca or something. He also wants me to make some t-shirts with Humphrey Bogart...

I was trying to avoid, mainly because of the swirl, the following formulas:

    1 - name inside a circle
2 - logo on the left of the company's name
3 - logo centered on top of the company's name
4- the above plus "RECORDS" with the same typeface but light and smaller, also centere
5 - logo to the right of the name
    6 - hipster x logo
7 - I did a version of TINK! and a bar/stroke to the right with the extended name, like a lawyer company or something or a bank.
    8 - symbol between words

I don't know, after a week of sketches and ideas, i had a week of sending stuff for feedback and working around trying to avoid having a logo like i don't know how many.

In the end maybe if it's similar to others in the formula is not so bad.
    Well, better than this anyway.

I don't dislike the last one that much when compared to the others.
I was also a bit positive about the direction of the last one from the top four.

But now i feel like i should start all over.

And he needs it for yesterday.
    I should deliver it tomorrow.

I have more work to do.
But if i tell him to forget this shit and this concept it might be a problem and I think he will freak out.

I prefer not to take it forward if I'm not happy, but it's too much pressure now to deliver something when they're waiting for it to make t-shirts and edit another record.

There's probably 50 logos like this.
But it was the first way I thought about having this two labels combined.
No swirl. Maybe a dot between TINK! and RECORDS.
    Like a vinyl record...

Doesn't need much more apart from some kerning in TINK!

    • Reminds me of NIVEA as well...

Personally I think the swirl could be a really nice element to play with, if done well...

That's the last thing I'd drop

  • Amicus0

    Try simplifying the redesign.

Remove the swirl, (or minimise to the bottom of the exclamation mark)
Redraw the original type with a better K.

    • The type alone has energy and a retro 80s kitsch that has some kind of cool, or as my son says, swag.Amicus
    • interesting perspective. not sure if I like what i'm seeing but I like the way you recommend to change the original logo
      ********
  • instrmntl0

Make tink records into the record arm and needle.

    • Believe me I've tried but the results i achieved were scary as fuck! I don't think my talent reaches that level of concept
      ********
    • i can not even picture it. That's to far for me at this time of the night, almost 5am...

    • Yeah, the type would prob be too small and illegibleinstrmntl

They didn't like this one, for example.

  • Beeswax0

The current whirl looks a little outdated shapewise.
    Show an example of this.

    • i know what you mean Beeswax. I used a similar one to the two in the lower row and it reminded them of rss feeds
