I spent about $2500 on tests xrays and diagnosis's to find out my dog had cancer. They told me I could spend more for treatment or let it take it course. I really couldn't afford any more than that at the time and talked to my friend that went through the same thing a year earlier. He was in a much better finical situation and spent almost 10,000 on treatments and his dog still died.
We both ended up getting new dogs, they will never replace your first one but it helps and costs a hell of a lot less. Plus once you start having kids you realize their health and happiness is more of a propriety. Damn I hope my new dog never reads that last line, he'll be devastated.

Just wanted to give you dudes an update, since I appreciate all who took time to add their wisdom and experiences.
We brought dora to the cardiologist in Vancouver, thinking we couldnt afford a pacemaker but we could find out how to at least make her last weeks more comfortable / less painful for her (if she was in pain). Cardiologist said based on the tests we had done that he wants to test a few more things because he thought it wasnt her heart at all that was the problem, but her heart stopping was basically a 'result' of other medical issues she was having. So he tested it up and said yea, it's looking that way, so have some more tests done back home to see if it's Addisons Disease again (what our vet originally thought it was, but he tested for it and it was negative).
We ended up getting a couple more small tests to get us 90% sure that it was her chemistry fucking up, but instead of paying another $400 to see if she had Addisons disease, we decided to just start treating her for it since the treatment was meds that basically would stabilize her chemistry, which we knew was fucked up from tests that confirmed it. well, after a couple weeks of taking these meds, she was pretty much 100% back to normal. She hasn't had an attack since (its been a couple months now) and is basically just like she always was before shit started to hit the fan.
We were basically saying our goodbyes to her, thinking she would be toast within a day or 3 and now its like the whole 4 months of emotional hell and stress never even happened. Insane man.. insane..
Thanks again for all your support and insight guys. You will be happy to know you played a part in saving a cute little dogs life.

depends on the situation, if I don't have much scratch at the time something happens to my dog, I have to prioritize my kid first so IDE be like "yo dawg I heard you like to be homeless, so I put a homeless in your homeless!" other than that, IDE be willing to spend a small fortune on my dog because he's got my back and I'm all he's got.

^ that is why I love what I call functional dogs... small cute dogs are ok but in the end they lack the utility of more trained dogs. such as hunting, etc. Dogs that help in survival situations can feed there own way. Doesnt work in the city however unless your dog can catch squirrels and you are ok eating city squirrels. working dogs is where it is in country survival.

We dropped about a grand into our 15 year old cat Simba about 6 months ago in hopes that we'd get another 2 years or so with him. He had an enlarged thyroid and had dropped a considerable amount of weight, was racing around the house at night, yowling, etc. The doc said that for a cat his age, that wasn't quite normal. So we went ahead and he removed one of his thyroid glands, and was well. Now Simba is back at it, he's lost some more weight, racing, yowling, etc.
Right now, though, we don't have the money on hand to have another huge vet bill, so I'm putting off taking him in. Sucks so bad. My 5 year old son LOVES this cat. =(

not a dog owner but mantrakid your story kinda made my day..\
one thing that a friend of mine and his wifey did was use a gofundme for their pup. you'd be surprised who'd give $$$ for a dog they've met or just folks who want to see YOU happy will give. of course it's another thing to ask friends for money but...
glad it's doing well!
bravo!

best news all day! Congrats and good for you not giving up on her.

I met by best friend when I bought a 5 year old Chow Chow from an ad in the paper. The reason the owners were selling was because he hated cats (so they said). One week later I found out he had a rare disease. I spent $1500 I didn't have at the time to keep him alive. He ended up living to to be 18. Best money I ever spent.

Wow it's 2015 and Dora's still doing awesome, better than ever and not a single issue since we started giving her (cheap!) daily meds. I cant believe how intense of a time period this was.

New knee for one of our dogs was $3500, same week our other dog cost us about $1000. I'd do it again tomorrow, what's family worth to you?

I've always wanted a puppy when I was a kid but my parents never let me have one. I don't think i'd have the patience to have a dog today, but they are cute.

Whatever was available in savings and on credit cards. It's been just over a year since my 17 yr old lab collie mix passed on and had there been anything we could have done I would have paid it for him to have a couple extra months, so long as he was comfortable and happy. I feel like the age issue is moot when you have been together for as long as we were.
