How often do you get an oil change for your car?
Apparently the old 3,000 mile rule is obsolete and you can go up to 7,500 with some newer cars?

Every season and before & after road trips. I change my oil way too often. Then again, my Jeep has over 200,000 miles and still runs like a champ.
- it runs like a champ because you keep its oil nice and cleanmonospaced

By changing the oil do you mean top-up the oil? Or do you empty it out first? I topped mine up for the first time in nearly 2 years yesterday but think I might have done something wrong...
- He means change. How did you fuck up a top-up? You did measure the level, right?monospaced
- Yea I just topped it up, it's still running so I guess it's all hunky doreyWhiteFace
- If you wait until it stops running, it's too late.lemmy_k
- take 5 minutes and check it... all you need is a paper towelmonospaced

you can get your oil tested... tells you how well the previous owner took care of your engine if you have a used car...
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/RE: how often to change oil.... RTFM....3,000 for an old car, sometimes 10,000 for a newer one.... but also, how do you drive... is it in traffic, then more often, is it on highway, then longer..... There's no harm in changing it more often except losing $25.... if you run low, due to a leak, add more immediately and then get an oil change and a "flush" to clean up your engine after it ran too low on oil....
a test report... for the geekily inclinded...

Most newer cars will tell you when it's time to change the oil. Synthetic is generally 7,500 to 10,000. My idiot neighbor puts in synthetic and still changes it every 3,000 (it's a newer truck).
- synthetic every 3000.... for a truck....is it a ford truck with a 4.6 in it?.... those run forever without syntheticvaxorcist

Despite what your car "tells" you, or what the manual says, just open the fucking hood, check the dipstick every week or so, and change or top off accordingly. This is seriously the fucking LEAST you could do for something you likely paid a ton for. People seriously don't respect their vehicles, it makes no sense to me. I see people ignore these things like they're little (which they are!) and then end up paying up the ass when they have to correct for simple negligence.
- a handful of $30 oil changes over 5 years vs a $3,000 repairmonospaced
- Same goes for brakes. If they squeak, they're not normal. Just have them fixed before you're replacing your rotors.monospaced
- yup, cars give us the signs, we just have to know how to read themmoldero

I used to change the oil in my R1 (bike) every 1k religiously.
it all depends on what you do with your vehicle and how you drive it.
obviously driving at higher RPM's all the time will wear that shit out faster.

I think weather plays a part too. warmer climates can go a little longer, around 5-6k...but i think in colder climates it's more like 3-4k. i could be wrong though but i think i read that somewhere.
- cold start = hard on engine... delivery driver in minnesota = change oil more often...vaxorcist

My Golf Mk1 is built like a tank and almost never needs oil. Everytime I look for the liquids, everything is fine.
- was the oil clean (clear) though?moldero
- where are you looking, at the ground under the car? leaks aren't the only thing wrong with oil.monospaced
- yeah man, dirty oil is bad, just imagine little pieces of metal lubricating your pistons at 4krpm
moldero - + broken down oil has a weaker viscosity or whatever, so its less like oil and more like, well, not oilmoldero

Sure seems like other things on cars wear out and fall apart a long, long time before the engine.
The only times I've ever heard of anyone really having engine trouble, was if the oil leaked out, or the coolant system got fucked up. Like a coolant leak, or a blown water pump.
- yup, lost a motor in my truck in the mojave desert because my thermostat locked upmoldero
- just 2 years backmoldero
- ran me a small fortune for a new Jasper rebuildmoldero
- I blew a head gasket after ignoring a coolant leak. Oil is still important though.monospaced
