Just got back from a press event where I saw one of these...
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs…
MY GOD...it makes 1080p look like the screen on a 90's Nokia phone.
Though sadly 4k is not only the resolution, but also the price...time to start saving.
Though the Sony guy told me most films are filmed in 8k (way beyond 1080p) and downgraded for affordable TV output...so, that has obviously got me wanting to see what an 8K TV would be like.

Yeah but will sharpness cut out my corneas?

I've seen 8k Samsung TV. 20 feet away you saw trees, then as you walked closer you saw branches, then closer, twigs, then closer details of those twigs. The resolution was limited by the resolution of the eye. BUT... if you get excited about the resolution... then you gotta walk outside and look at the world.

Was it "realistic awesome" or "artificial awesome?" I'm intrigued by the next step up from 1080P - just wonder how much it looks like a super-enhanced picture, or more of a "looking out your window" feel. I guess the former might help achieve the latter.
Do explain.

no content = no sale.
no 4k movies.
no 4k channels.- soon enough though...lvl_13
- They once said that about Blu-Ray, and that was also Sony's move.sem

- sorry to break it for you. there's now 4k movies.akrok
- of course it will happen. what new format ever had content in the beginning?... luddite.fadein11

@Mg33, it was realistic awesome, its like how Blu-Ray looked compared to normal DVD for the first time, well this is the step up above that.
As for content, as I said, the best content is filmed in 8K apparently, so its just a matter of rolling out a new format, but if anyone can do it, Sony can...as they did with Blu-Ray...not to mention Sony movies all being 4K format from now on apparently.
He also said PS4 will have a 4K resolution output so the developers have the option.

My wife has an uncle who is one of those guys who, every year, is waiting for the next greatest TV breakthrough to come out before he buys a flat panel tv. All he has is an old tube TV I think. He's a sweet guy, a retired mail man, but he will never buy a new one because he has that mindset where once he has it, something better will come along.
It's funny to be around him and her dad and another uncle at the holidays. They're always jabbering about something with tvs or computers: "you know, they're coming out with the blah blah that thing that's gonna do X better than the other thing..."

This is TV stuff worth getting excited about to be honest. F'ing 3D stuff is still a novelty being used on inappropriate movies because it's trendy.

I agree that MOST 3D stuff is not worth the price, when you get a good Active 3D TV and there is that ONE good scene in a movie, it makes you glad you've got it...but yeah, those moments are rare, so understand why most have avoided it.
Jackass 3D was enough to make me pay up though...that was funny

We have Tron, and that's the only 3d movie we have. But they filmed Tron perfectly for 3d. It's pretty rad watching it in the dark. And we have an active 3D tv - Samsung 2011 D7000 60"

Man, 8k TVs are you kidding me?
I can tell you that in my opinion this is something I don't look forward to. Mainly as a content producer. It really sucks having to wait for renders, I really dislike working on 1080i projects right now, and usually try to convince my clients to go 720, mainly because with longer renders, a lot of times you have to sacrifice creativity for production time's sake.If computers were 10 times as fast, then I have no problem, but as of right now, it's a pain in the ass. I worked on a project shot on RED camera, and sure... looks really nice, but the insane amount of space / resources used for a project like that, just to end up being compressed and stream over the web is incredibly disappointing.
And the worst thing is, clients are already requesting it just because it's available. The project will end up on an animated gif on a forum, but they all want it shot on 8k. Its insane.
