That first image isn't real, hence it is not designed at all. That "Sale" banner is at least eye-catching and interesting and unique. It's also surprisingly readable. Funny comment you wrote though.

Is there a word that exists which describes mundane (graphic) design that has no hope of ever becoming something great? For example something that requires no conceptual foundation, just starbursts or other gaudy elements that somebody else feels the need to add? Not necessarily bad design, just not good design.
Seems like I'm doing a lot of it lately, and I'm not very good at it.
