Client picks up printed materials and pays?

Someone referred me to a client on the other side of the country.
They need some cards and brochures for their business.
I assume it makes sense for it to be printed in Philadelphia where he lives and know of some printers in the area. Is it weird if I send the printer the files and then they pay them directly and pick it up?

no, just tell him he'll be escaping the 20% "handling" fee usually charged if you dealt with it

So am I supposed to have them printed and shipped to the client and deal with it all myself and charge a % on top?

I'd say if you want the best for your client, get the printer to make a proof and send the client over to have a look... or I guess you could get the printer to send them a proof directly and take a %.
But having them pay directly is less risky to you, as you're not fronting the money. If client doesn;t pay, you only have hours lost not actual $$.

put your shit on a USB stick and send it over to utopian. He from philly & will print it out for you.

its pretty standard to charge a % fee on top of the printers price. there's always faffing about.
one example = imagine they want another print run in 6 months and ask you to deal with it. all the artwork is ready, but you still have to organise the run, pay the printers, and then invoice the client. if they deal direct, they get to remove those fees.

Soon as they ask to do this, I always say there'll be an additional print-handling fee and explain why. The reasons are easy to appreciate and let's face it, they are genuine.
If they don't like it I send 40dpi RGB artwork with no crops and then go on holiday for 3 weeks.

is it worth you approving a proof? does the project warrant it?
personally i would want to proof it myself and send what i think is best after the printer delivers everything to ME. then i send a new invoice, with a % on top to him with prints.
