I did a string of jobs that were somewhat related for 10 years, as in house staff, then freelance, then as a department head at a small agency, then for my own company which I still operate.
illustrator - designer - programmer - producer - producer/designer/programer - EP
I'll still do a freelance contract or two a year, but now I am a booking agent / sometimes tour manager / all the time talent manager. I live on tour buses half of the year. After years of long office hours I just wanted to drift for a while and it's been fun. The problem solving and budget management skills you pick up as a producer works well with managing mid level touring acts (drawing around 350-500 heads at shows nationally). Usually it's a bus load of sensitive or possibly difficult creative people on board -- not much different than keeping some balance in a design shop office.

I have always wanted to open a coffee shop and secondhand bookshop combined. But I think this will always be a bit of a dream

I totally agree with the article above, about culture and capitalism requiring the division of labour. We have become ultra specialists in some ways with no real view of the bigger picture. In other ways, in design in particular, we've become generalists within our field.
We all have to be able to do print layouts, retouching, some photography, drawing, typesetting, web layouts, maybe some motion graphics etc.still all within quite a narrow field.Having the freedom to explore different media and approaches would be great.

I started my time as a designer in 1999 and quit that to become a restaurant manager. Unfortunately, restaurant gig is more money.

I'm moved to the product side focusing on UX, wires, personas, flows, etc. While this isn't exactly "leaving" design it's a change for me b/c I'm not focused on executing a skin on other ideas - I'm now defining the concept. I'm really enjoying making tons of detailed and annotated wires and addressing every use case possible for web, mobile, or tablet experiences.

Designing, building and installing bespoke speaker and monitor systems into homes, clubs and studios. Engineering everything from the amps to the drivers, cabinets and installation rooms.
- Is what I would imagine I'd like to do, if I knew how to do it. And had the opportunity. And development money. etc etcmikotondria3

I always think it would be more fun to work in a print shop, like a high end one. But they always turn out to be like factories with business people running them and then like immigrants doing all the work.
All the college educated craftsmen only make furniture or things like glass art.
- Didn't mean to sound snooty. But I would feel strange sending a print shop my resume with agency experience on it.bainbridge

I find it particularly amusing (in my own case at least), that the week drags on sometimes and I'm ready for the weekend, but after a relaxing weekend, I *need* to get back to work. Having a sick day or being away from the office more than a day or two and I start to feel aimless. A bit sad, really, but I think it speaks to how much I enjoy this industry.

Not yet, but I dream of apprenticing at a custom furniture/carpentry/woodworking shop and just being a furniture-making bum for the rest of my life.

I have been contemplating working for Apple. God knows that Apple's amateurish iOS UI design needs a lot of help.

^ It would be nice to do something that helps people like this.
Seems like lots of good designers start in larger companies then work in smaller studios or start their own where they work on small time projects. The design is better and creative but doesn't reach a lot of people. The world doesn't need any more independent publishers, curators and book designers.
