If straight self defense is your goal I wouldn't recommend Kung Fu. This from someone who trained KF for 6 years then switched to Muay Thai and am now training BJJ (with a little Kali thrown in).
It really depends on your definition of self defense:
If you are training to win a bar or street fight I'd go Muay Thai or just straight western boxing (make sure you develop some sort of take-down defense).
If you want to diffuse situations and not get arrested BJJ is great. Not necessarily the best for a street fight.
If you're worried about a gun to your face life or death struggle, Krav Maga or Kali might be for you (do some cardio too).
I equate Kung Fu to training to fire a black powder musket. You can certainly kill or do serious damage with it, but there are better technologies out there.
Training any legitimate martial art (including Kung Fu) is definitely better then having nothing, but if you expect to defend yourself against someone who also knows how to fight you better hope you've trained against resisting partners.
If you want my self-defense 2 cents I would recommend cross-training a striking art with a grappling art with some sort of light weapons training.
Good luck!
- I go in a self defense school. All we learn is minded towards saving our life.Bennn
- Kung Fu Wing Chun is the center of the class, but we have sanshou, bjj, boxing and other technics mixed into that.Bennn
- Wing Chun can be VERY quick and fast. Nothing like a black powder musket, like you said.Bennn
- or buy a gun, learn how to shoot and keep your distance from ppl that do BJJ or shit that won't do anything against a gun.Maaku
- "If you want to diffuse situations and not get arrested, BJs are great"? what?detritus
- Wing Chun had a string of hits in the 80's, with a modicum of success in the US. Lead singer went on to a career in songwriting.face_melter
- I thought my Kung Fu striking was pretty good and I had success in tournaments. My first day in Muay Thai I learned it wasn't.BK
- ^That and a BJJ white belt probably could have taken me down and choked me out in 6 seconds.BK

- I'd like to see him fight live against an equally skilled & resisting Muay Thai or BJJ practitioner.BK
- My problem with KF is there is A LOT of training against non-resisting opponents. It's not too difficult to look bad ass when you're not getting hit back.BK
- If you don't believe me do a walk in at any reputable MT or BJJ school and test your skills. I did and still do love KF, it was a humbling pill to swallow.BK
- Not trying to be a hater, just relating my experience and 10+ years of insight.BK
- I dont know BK, we dont learn traditional kung fu at my school and we are fighting very oftenBennn
- Benn- You may be right. Try a dedicated MT or BJJ school even if only for one class and see how your feeling afterwards.BK

and Sanshou for people who dont know what is it :
Sanshou, Sanda, Chinese boxing, Chinese kickboxing, or an "unsanctioned fight" is a Chinese self-defense system and combat sport. Sanshou is a martial art which was originally developed by the Chinese military based upon the study and practices of traditional Kung fu and modern combat fighting techniques; it combines full-contact kickboxing, which includes close range and rapid successive punches and kicks, with wrestling, takedowns, throws, sweeps, kick catches, and in some competitions, even elbow and knee strikes.
- Shanshou is cool. The downside is the quality of training partners vs. a quality Muay Thai school. It's a popularity thing but that was my experience.BK

I know a practitioner who recently made an English Wiki article about Drunken Boxing that was immediately deleted because a previous article on the same subject was also deleted.
Apparently the previous article was deleted not too long ago because the art was considered a "hoax".
I wonder if the editors are looking for a gladiator style event between the different arts to prove which one is "for real" and will be granted an article.
In the mean time the practitioner is being drowned by wiki bureaucracy..
