Hi,
I am going to treat myself to a camera for Christmas.
I will be mainly shooting video (would like 1080 60fps feature if poss.) but photos also.
I am looking at Gopro Hero 3+ but it has a fixed focus I think? No autofocus? May be wrong.
Would I better getting a compact DSLR?
if so what would yo recommend?
I only want to spend about £400.
Gopro quality was v.impressive but as I want to take the odd photo as well I am not sure whether it is the best option.
Thanks

iPhone? I was pretty impressed with the slow motion (about the only thing I like about the phone, but it is pretty nice)

This might not be exactly what you're looking for but I use the Replay XD. (I use it as a helmet cam when I race) It's super tiny, has a ton of different mounts and has a lot of features.

Sony NEX range?
I love my 5N.
Drawback about video is on the 5N there's no audio-in other than via hotshoe mic. The others in the range might allow audio-in.
Great video quality from those cameras. It's small enough to pack into small bag - or even pocket depending on what lens you've got on it.
Don't bother with a DSLR if you are wanting it to film whilst travelling light (bikes/boarding/hiking etc)
- cool - yep i have looked at these - was my original choice until i went dow then camcorder road.fadein11

Thanks so far. any others?
Pen? Nikon one?
Definitely needs to be compact.
Anyone got a Gopro? does it have autofocus?

i like my gopro 3+ black but it's very specialized. if you're not doing exciting things, it could gather dust. But, if you enjoy any action sport it can definitely be fun. The more mounts you have for it, the more uses you'll find for the camera
As far as the odd photo, here is a frame of video for reference

I don't know the video beyond playing around, but Canon's M series has been on a super sale. I think they have them for like $310 (if there are any left).

You can't beat a nice prime lens on a dslr for video. And it's the start of an upgradable kit, rather than a on-off purchase.
That being said, my dslr (nikon d5200) and lens (sigma 17-70mm) are a terrible combo. When you switch to live view for shooting mode, it suddenly focuses like a blind, drunk idiot

thanks.
okay will change the question - what is the best compact camera around £400? must shoot full HD pref at higher frame rates.

shutup with the iPhone crap he wants a CAMERA not a smart phone. you know with a proper lens, aperture/shutter interface, image sensors etc. something you don't have to touch a screen to take a pic.

^ suggesting an iphone isn't a stupid option. If you don't have a budget to get a GH3 / 5D etc... then the image quality and FPS in the 5S is better than most point and shoot options.
- its a stupid option.uuuuuu
- you are not considering a proper camera's lens and sensor chips and interfaceuuuuuu
- also I think iphone shoots video at like 4mps vs a camera shooting at anywhere from 15-40 megs per seconduuuuuu
- there is a massive quality difference. FPS and resolution are a fraction of the issue hereuuuuuu

^ yep not an option. I have a Galaxy Note 2 which shoots 1080 video and although very good I need a dedicated device.

iPhone in slow mo is pretty impressive, that's all I was saying.
My D800, which I also own a steadicam for, is a beast and not something I will use often. iPhone is easy, simple and affordable.
I suggested the Canon M as a middle ground.
No need for anyone to get hostile here. :-)

In that case I would suggest getting an iPhone
