I have picked up a few nice things in the charity shops
so far this week including this lovely old record box
which the kind old lady behind the counter said
"oh, you can have that as we were going to throw it out anyway"
but when I told her it still had some records in it she said
"well you can have it for a pound then" - which was nice.

The 78's inside turned out to be quite nice, some by the Folk Dance Band
others by the Folk Dance Orchestra as well as several titled Music For Movement
which are the 78rpm versions of the old schools records that were
played in PE class to get kids up and dancing about. I have a
    few music for
schools LP's and 7"s but these are by far the oldest examples I have come across.

Also in the same shop were some 7"s which were wrapped
in 1970's wallpaper sleeves. I was pleased with this one as
it's a tourists disc issued by some Yugoslavian coach company,
I so wanted it to be the Italian Job Theme but it's actually this

I was a bit perplexed by the vinyl filing system at the Age Concern warehouse,
perhaps some records shouldn't be left quite so close to others.

This old boy ought to know better too as he was 62
when this was released just before he died in 1963.

Next to it was a soundtrack from 1967 by another fella with a dubious past.

Thankfully in the same box was this LP by someone with
an unblemished career, a 1980 record by Princess Grace.

The Animal Sanctuary turned up a couple of Christian albums
including one by The Genesis and an oddly titled album by these 5 lasses.

Also in the same shop was an unplayed copy of a late 60's album by Johnny Nash

    Charity Shop finds this week

A great 2 x LP with pretty much everything that
happened between 1922-72. Clips from the BBC
sound archives includes the death of kings to
The Goon Show to the sound of Big Ben.

A typeface that hints that the music within might be
just a bit sexy but you can relax, it isn't.

Two old Dad's Army stars moaning about how there is
'Not Much Change' from a pound, gawd bless 'em.

Another 25p single I couldn't resist was this Danish instrumental
from 1968 which sounds like a low budget Bonzos.

Bob Hardcastle gives a commentary on what is good
recorded sound but unfortunately it's all about classical
music and absolutely nothing to do with Phil Collins.

Best find of the week by a country mile was this Big Youth
7" 'Screaming Target' from 1973 in this superb old sleeve

    which was the inspiration for

Some recent auction wins, I'm really getting into these
local auctions now and can't understand why I wasn't
    that fussed before.

I was pleased to discover this EP which I have never
seen before stuck inside a John Denver LP sleeve!

In with a box of Xian Folk was this unusual 7" complete
with an Isle Of Man actual stamp stamped sleeve

This one is just pretty rubbish cover versions but
I love the sleeve and oh to be one of those lucky
    bingo winners on the back!

The vinyl was pretty scratched but nice cheeky sleeve,
    all ship shape and erm...

I bid on one box especially to get this early 70's LP
featuring a young Mike Oldfield and an older John Peel

There were some rubbish 78's inside this old Columbia
records case but it's a fine keeper I shall fill with good 78's!

The nicest find was a pair of what are literally 'Wedding Albums'
recorded locally in the mid 60's and featuring the whole service
including vows, I wonder if the loving couples are still together?

Charity shop vinyl from the past week or so including
a double helping of the first and last albums by Grimsby's
    finest, The Singing Postman.

    [IMG]http://i144.photobucket.com...

The one above was his debut on Ralph Tuck Promotions,
"the smallest recording organisation in the world"
before he was signed to one of the biggest, Parlophone.
First Class Male was released on Gemini in 1970 and then
he disappeared until 1977 when he released a 7" titled
    Fertilising Liza, bless 'im.

I was pleased to find an unplayed copy of this lovely album,
I have had a tatty one for years.

My first impression of the sleeve was that it must be
an unflattering painting of a banjo wielding hick,
then I saw the back and changed my mind.

    and why not?

Maybe Judy is singing for the only other thing I can
think of who was 'born in a trunk' - Basketcase

Great to see Ethel is really getting into it on the sleeve of her 1963 LP

A nice find was this EP of songs from a 1957 movie
I have never seen or heard of before.

25p for a stone mint copy of this JB classic.

vinyl odds and ends I've picked up in the past few days

I was most pleased with this curious Saydisc LP which
according to the label is a 'Limited Edition', though it's
hard to imagine it ever sold many copies.

The sleeve for this LP may have been inspiration for
this Pink Floyd compilation as it also came out in 1971.

Lovely tunes from Victorian Barrel Organs to musical boxes also released in 1971.

I have bell-ringing albums but this is the first one
I've found with them accompanied by a guitar.

This was only 49p so I couldn't resist hearing these oldies slaying the oldies.

A nice pair of JM comps.

A BBC 12" single of narration for you to read / listen along to the Gremlins movie.

Picked up a stash of soundtrack albums today,
they were all were £2 each, I hadn't heard of some
of the films but these were the pick of the bunch
along with an unexpected album in a plain white sleeve
    which I simply couldn't resist.

2 x Tip Shop visits = some 7" delights, mostly Folk finds

    EFDSS Records 1969

Late 60's EP on Gus Records

This B is much better than the flip on this teachers
plea for more pay in 1970.

A couple of old HMV EP's

    other 50p oddities

Not heard of the A but this B is more familiar
as the theme to classic TV show Steptoe & Son

A tatty sleeve but a nice find of Max's 7" co-written by Ian Dury

this record made to be played as you played.

other vinyl things I have picked up over the weekend

UK pressed 7" in an 8" sleeve released on Social Records
in 1963, it's a heady mix of fact and religious doctrine.

A Canadian folk sampler from Irving/Alamo Records,
but I've never heard of any of the artists and sadly
there are no undiscovered Neil Youngs or Joni Mitchells
    amongst the 12 listed here.

I had never come across this before,
but was familiar with Alan Hawkshaw's Library music
from the early 70's and this was a white label test press
    with info sheets enclosed too.

Listening through this LP I'm still not sure what the
connection between doctors and rugby is, and the
f#*%$& thing has beeps and farting noises over all
    the f%@#&* swearwords too!

Lemmy pops up on several tracks of this UK Decca album from 1959, oh no hang on...

This was mixed in with a pile of dance 12"s and was
released on BBC Records in 1971 originally for use
in schools but now more likely to be dropped into mixes

Someone had to rescue this old steam engines EP

I came across a stash of donated Peter Cook & Dudley Moore
vinyl in a charity shop warehouse in Milton Keynes at the
weekend along with other jazzy bits n bobs.

This album cover looked curious if a little bland, but flipping it
over it turns out to be a one sided promo LP for a picture
framing company plugged by Pete & Dud!
Featuring 'a light hearted appraisal of Britain's top group
in the picture moulding business' with a live set from
The Dudley Moore Trio at The Stables in Milton Keynes.

It also came with an insert.

An early Pete & Dud album produced by pre-fabs George Martin in 1961.

Another record I picked up on the strength of the sleeve
(and the fact that it was 50p) was this old Jazz album with
    Charlie Parker and friends.

In the same box was this early 70's smooth jazz thang produced by Sergio Mendes.

A bit of a more Latin vibe from Tony Hatch in '69 on this one.

I've a tatty copy of this which I used to have in my show box,
but this will be an upgrade as it's nice & shiny clean.

Another album I couldn't leave in the box as there must
be no-one within a 50 miles radius who would even give
this a second glance (for godsake I hope so)

    • Nice man! I'd be all over that Sergio Mendez one. I'm going to have to look that one upscruffics

Picked up this one recently at a thrift store.

I picked up some nice things at the Reading fair yesterday,
but I sold loads too so that justifies more purchases in my book!

A well spent pound for this Chinese LP

There was a bloke who had about 5 tables full of stuff
and was doing a deal on them before he shipped them
off to Holland next week, the ones below were 3 for a £10
    so I treated myself.

I was really pleased with this one, the cover was a bit tatty but the vinyl was sweet

I especially collect flexis and this one for 75p (!?)
pressed all my buttons, coloured, 10", sampler, FilmOphone!

    • Cool. I'd have bought Mental Music and the Ivor Cutler one for the covers alone.Fax_Benson

Vinyl finds amongst a recent trip to the Lakeland Fells,
mostly in Cleator Moor and Maryport

I was very pleased to find this lovely Blue Horizon pressing
as I've had to make do with a CBS re-issue for years!

The Mac' were sitting in the 50p rack next to this Stax original

The St. Kitts steel band tackle the classics

Appropriately Maryport threw up this LP which features
an entire side of songs by St. Winifreds School Choir

God knows how this noisey/sweary Jazz LP
from Wakefield turned up in Cockermouth.

The sleeve looked interesting but it turned out to be pretty dull

The most bizarre find and the only 7" was this African disc
    with a very disturbing tracklist

On a much lighter note, a decent mid 70's Dave Edmunds album

various 7" early morning car boot finds

Picture disc single from 1982 featuring various football stars
on the front however, flipping it over it is signed by them and
for no obvious reason Jimmy Savile OBE.

Indian demo disc for promoting the film Yaarana in 1980.

    2 x 10p Folk EP's

Swedish single in a lovely mottled red wax from 1971

2 x white flexi discs of Spanish Folk music released in 1962

I've a similar flexi given away by Your Computer mag,
there may have only ever been 2 unless someone knows more?

Clear vinyl flexi to celebrate the royal engagement in 1981

I assume this square flexi was given away with a board game
in 1984, I have a Snow White one too.

    LP finds in fields

The debut HeeBeeGeeBees parody album featuring
Angus Deyton & Phillip Pope. I have never come across
their 1984 follow up '20 Big No.2's' on my digging trips.

The 'Smashed Twits' magazine insert includes an
    exclusive interview with David Bowwow

A double album anthology of Venezuelian music + poetry

From the 1968 BBC radio series based on ye olde booke

A real oddity, US issue of the drag star recorded live at
The Black Cap in Camden Town in 1972

the pick of a pile of cheap Xian Folk

the best finds were these 2 x lovely lasses at £2 a pop

    a 5 x album live set, unplayed!

nice! i've finally got imgur app working on my phone so i can start posting pictures again! had some good digs recently and a really good one yesterday on the way home from work. hit up some charity shops and found the following:

^really really good bluesy funk. i actually had this one on my wantlist on discogs for ages.

^reggae/dub. has a track on it that's on one of my favourite dub mixes/comps from way back when i first got into music.

^never heard of this guy until yesterday. good drums-driven funk/rock/blues

got 7 more funk records in that haul for £10 in total. will see if i've got time to post them later.

Been a while since I found some solid grooves at the thrift shop. Everyone and their mom seems to dig for vinyl these days.

Anyway, Brothers Johnson for the win!

Also, I need a silver jacket like the brother with the 'fro.
