They basically told us who did, Lawnmower dude.
But he's only a pawn in the group of pedos. Tuttles are behind the much larger picture. There will be some kind of twist though. Marty of Cohle die maybe? Marty's kids involved in the abuse? Something crazy.
- Lawnmower dude, ricky and his brother were the 'nappers. Acquiring 'prey' for the ringleaders.wagshaft

There was an interesting theory posted on the last page that something will happen to one of Marty's daughters...bringing him to the point where Cohle was in the beginning of the series. That could tie into the "time is a circle" theme they keep emphasizing. Or not, who knows :P
- Perhaps Marty's daughter already has experience with cult. Via her granddaddy.wagshaft

I like the theories that Marty's daughter had some involvement with this, but i don't see how they introduce that and resolve it in one hour.
- I can see where his father in law is possibly involvedRamanisky2

Anyone know what was up with the spiraling clouds towards the end (when he walks into the dark room w/ the skull seat, the room darkens, those clouds appear, right before the big dude appears and tries to get him). Sorry if that gives something away for you folks who haven't watched it yet (don't think it really does). Is that some kind of heaven / hell reference or something?
- You mean meaning beyond that he often has hallucinations?ETM
- Yup, hallucinations. They even brought it up in the car. Its always there.DRIFTMONKEY
- Plus the fact that the hallucinations got the better of him, distracting him from seeing Errol.ETM
- One more element of his damaged life biting him in the ass.ETM

- his daughter's soul. that's why he felt redemption and finality in the case. "good is winning". never would have said that beforezenmasterfoo
- He said feeling his daughter's soul came later. When dying.ETM

I enjoyed the series. I thought the end was a bit hollow and unsatisfying. Perhaps, in reality, many things would have prevented them from breaking deeper into whatever cult or ring was at the heart of the crimes... but I would have liked a little more explanation about the group's motives, even though if it slipped through their fingers.
But there is no way Rust would be satisfied just with just getting Errol, after the conspiracy he had uncovered and what he witnessed in the video.
Errol would just be the hand, and nothing would change without cutting off the head.

I feel like the "let's make flowers" request was to tattoo or scarify her back with the spiral shape found on a few of the dead victims, and some others (can't remember exactly who or how many) who were involved in the murders.
- but the ol errol got distracted by womanlyish advances and the smell of burnt eggs and old newspapersprophetone
- yeah, and slamming his fingers into her rotten abyss.mg33

I've seen people bring up the Chekhov's Gun.
principle requiring that every element in a narrative be necessary and irreplaceable, and that everything else be removed.Totally agree.
