Who can we petition so that computer makers stop with these fucking 16:9 screens?
They're suddenly super popular with clients who then maximise their browser with layers of toolbars so that their actual visible area is a fucking letterbox, and then they moan and moan about content below the fold.
"I don't want to have to scroll"
Then you shouldn't have bought such a dumb fucking laptop.Arrgghh!!

UGH I feel your pain... it's especially terrible for making a site 'responsive' ... not only are there different aspect ratios for regular browsers and display resolutions, but when clients enable layers of toolbars and find an ugly width of the site suddenly you have to make rules for that odd behavior

What are you talking about? That's HD tv dimensions and should be standard.
iMacs are 16:9.666 or something.
Do people really use their browser full screen?
- yeah, I'm with you..
where can we counter-petition this petition :pMiguex - Yes, they most definitely use the browser full screen.Nathan_Adams
- HDTV is 16:9mekk

You want square monitors again?

Apart from HD video being 16:9, which is what I use my computer for about 0.0001% of the time. I think it boils down to lower mfg costs at 16:9 vs 4:3. A 19" panel is about 8% cheaper to produce in 16:9 vs a square because they are measured diagonally. So the squarer a panel, the more surface area for a given diagonal size. The more surface area, the more materials, the higher the mfg costs.
- it also means they don't need to manufacture separate panels for tvs vs monitorshereswhatidid

- You did actually make me pause to consider it as an option...Nathan_Adams

A petition for everything to be 16:9 sounds good to me

Who can we petition so that computer makers stop with these tiny smartphone screens?
They're suddenly super popular with clients who then view sites on their phone so that their actual visible area is a fucking tiny screen, and then they moan and moan about content being too small.
"I don't want to have to put on glasses"
"What do you mean there's no mouse?"Then you shouldn't have bought such a dumb fucking phone.
Arrgghh!!

- What is that nonsense? A Note III is the shape of a pencil?HAYZ1LLLA
- Presumably it takes up the space of the orange and pink screens above it too.. it's mostly conceptual..detritus
- No, complaining about clients complaining about viewport sizes, and that certain content drops 'below the fold' on awkward shaped viewports.Nathan_Adams
- Yeah, cause the Nexus 4 doesn't have that aspect ratio...SigDesign

Lately, I actually LOVE browsing with my window filling the screen. It keeps me focused on what I'm doing, websites tend to look better with some empty space around them, and I've got tabs and Exposé, etc.

websites for computers. so last year.
it's tablet and mobile phone now.swipe! swipe! swipe! swipe! swipe! swipe!

I usually browse full-screen... I didn't when I was using a giant 27" iMac at work, but it was just ridiculously large at that point. Also depends on if I'm using two monitors or not... anyway, I'm not complaining about viewport sizes. It's just challenging, depending on how much control you have over the content.

When your client has a set of toolbars using IE7 with windows XP in 2014, then its your job to tell him to move on and upgrade. Nobody, not even my 60 yo dad does it these days.
The design community (esp web design) has worked hard the last years to build design guidelines that don't give a damn about viewport dimensions, remember 'responsive'? Sometimes it's the designer who has to upgrade his own skillset and his points of view.
