Time Machine is a mystery to me. I backup using it but am terrified of the day I actually need it. Sorry can't help.

seems like your disk went kaput.
- Yeah. HD issue, not a Time Machine glitch.monospaced

I am not sure if it's related, but last week I've updated Mavericks and I have this same issue on ALL my HD's. Restarting with Cmd + R > Disk Utility, fixed it.

Does the Time Machine backup mount on the desktop?

def a time machine glitch because it's asking me to format, it wouldn't read the disk if it was a goner,
the data is probably there, I'm looking for a way to recuperate it

Time Machine does this to me once a year. It's not the disk, I've been using the same one for 3 years. I just format it and lose all my info every time. But I'm sure you could get that data out.
Good luck.

Ok, if this is a WD MyBook, do not attempt to use it with Mavericks again until you remove all WD software completely. There's a known issue with that software actually causing data loss on the MyBooks in Mavericks. I think WD has a fix. This is only if you have this HD.
