What is more important,
1. Designing a logo that suits what your demographic like.
or
2. Designing a logo that is classic and will prolong current trends?
Obviously the 2nd seems more obvious, however if the demographic are younger people they tend to engage with stuff that would apply to option 1.
And before you say both, please provide an example of that if possible and pref music themed.

in the words of the virgin mary, "come again?"

I'm not sure what you mean by prolonging current trends by designing a classic logo... ?
I also don't think that 1 and 2 have to be mutually exclusive, in fact ideally they should both apply to a strong identity, no?

If a logo doesn't appeal to the target market, then it fails. No?
A logo can appeal to a target market and outlast current design trends. If you're competing in a ultra trendy space, then it is going to be easier said than done. Is it important that the logo last for a year? Two years? A decade?
A lot depends on what the logo is for. You mention music. Is it for an artist, a label, a record shop or an equipment manufacturer?
- Do you think the target logo appeals to its target market?nylon

Both of your assertions are overly polarised and make you sound exactly like the sort of person I presume you're trying to avoid being, namely one who develops designs based on trends.

Neither. Logos don't exist to prolong trends, they exist to represent the company/organization/thing, and as such they first must serve that goal – in terms the target demographic will understand, but not exclusively.

Both. Do it right son

Thanks for the replies, and I agree. Its just its for a youth charity working with music so part of it has to be appealing to those it targets, but at the same time look stand up as a company people will want to invest in with funding, you know?
MTV Logo is all I have in my head at the moment.
- mtv is not in the same space as what you describe. i wouldn't start by comparing the two.doesnotexist

Btw, I agree with your points, its not that I'm arguing any different point, more sharing my frustration for finding something that suits.

A good logo is based on a concept.
Your "trendy" logos use terrible fonts, played out ideas and are poorly executed.
Everything will go out of style eventually. Some day the Target logo might be all gradients. If you execute a logo well based on a concept, you can't loose.
- I have a concept but every time I've executed it, it sucks. Going to take a break today now.sem

sem I don't think you're looking at the relationship between donor-charity-recipient the right way. These kids aren't picking the charity out of a book full of options, and given its specific music-related nature they certainly wouldn't be picking it based on the logo, it's something they're likely being referred to by a parent or teacher.
Yes, the logo should communicate the charity's relationship to music and kids somehow (neither of which MTV's logo does, by the way) if it isn't obvious enough from the name, but it also has to appear professional and competent to adults looking to donate or engage with the programs offered.
