.dmg is a very elegant solution to the problem and keeps the filesystem self contained.
"Would that file be compatible with windows?"
Since when has Windows supported basic OS functions like mounting a disk image at all?Shits fucking Babby's first OS

Anyway, the idea of separate users (UNIX style) in OSX is the overall solution for this. You are logged in, and as long as you are, everything assigned to your user is accessible. You can't access files/folders from a different user. If you Get info on a folder, you simply click the "Lock" check box and any other user, besides you, would have to type in your password to access it. You can also set Permissions through the Get Info dialogue.

You would think after all this time, Microsoft would have the simple feature of password protecting a folder in Windows 8.

You create a disk image (Disk Utility) with protection/password/encryption and toss everything into it.

probably an app for that

You would think after all this time, Apple would have the simple feature of password protecting a folder in Finder.
Am I not finding it? Do I have to resort to workarounds like creating a "Disk Image"?
This should have been standard 15 years ago. Simply applying a "lock" to a folder and one can only access it by entering in a password in a prompt box. How can this not exist after this much time???
