Do you get work from strangers finding your website or is most of your freelance work from referrals?
What are ways to get people to visit your site besides starting a popular blog or instagram to link to it?

Yes - do some reading on SEO and get yourself ranking in your area.
Word of mouth will only get you so much work.

...data mining?

Any decent work I've had freelancing has come through referrals. I've found my cold-requests to be tedious.

Might help to specify what sort of work you do if you're fishing for suggestions.
For instance, I probably get ‘~50%’ of my work through people Googling for the service they require and landing on my website... but then I'm in an industry that's not got quite as much keyword competition as most of you lot, so I don't need to panic about differentiation too much.
I'd wager that for designers and developers, you're going to have to rely upon traditional marketing and networking more to get decent and or productive leads.
- as anyone that has ever googled 'naked housework, finsbury park' would know.bumdrizzle
- No idea why, but I get more work from people searching for "succulent gimp", if my stats are anything to go by.detritus
