Grabbed this from the Reddit thread the Georges posted above:
"there's not enough space and resources for everyone to do what you're doing. It's great you can do that, but it's only possible for some people to live like that.
The problem is, if 7 billion people wanted solar panels like you, that would require huge amounts of energy and material, and we would trash the earth in the process.
Making compost is easy; pile shit up until it decomposes. nothing fancy needed. I've planted a garden, but this is no substitute for farming.
Not everyone can walk away. Off-grid living is for people who are relatively rich and do not have debt. My net worth is about -$10k, so I can't go anywhere."- That's a bit defeatist statement; there is not enough paints in the world for all of us to be painters - so what, so not everyone is a painter.pr2
- everyone is a painter.pr2
- In a status quo situation you're right. but in a SHTF scenario, there isn't enough space for all to do thisGnash

If it's viable, do it:
I live in a village of 1,300 and am having a go at it with my partner/wife; it's MUCH harder...
...The highs higher and the lows lower.
IF you can handle both good and growing days, then do it.
; )
- ...The goal is buy a few acres, grow our own food, live a manageable life, etc.ideaist
- A vegetarian diet?pinkfloyd
- An example of a home we just looked at: http://beta.realtor.…ideaist
- "grow our own food" = cattle (possibly), broilers (chickens), rabbits and yes vegetables.ideaist
- wow, that's awesomepinkfloyd
- 300k is too high as i'd rather pay everything at oncepinkfloyd
- Yeah, it will go for 200 - 225 (we're hoping to us). The goal is to be as far under the $200,000 mark as possible...ideaist

- OREGON, WASHINGTON, CALIFORNIAutopian
- I'd look for wilderness and check property friendly homestead laws or areas.yurimon
- I look for more mountain areas could be west coast or east coast. no areas with water issuesyurimon
- Also look for great neighbors or community even if you are in seclusion. town is important.yurimon
- dont want crabs in your life or shity sherif, law enforcementyurimon

Check out homesteading, some states have good laws on it.
I've seen some nice setups in my travel in mountain areas where you have no water issues in the states. technology to support it is better then ever. If you get a nice set up with micro hydro. sheeeeyT...

- No. The boring look is a deliberate choice. It allows for stealthy parking. Also, the flowers get you pulled over by the police who assumes you have drugs.jagara
- No joke about the flowers :)jagara
- If you put them side by side I rather go in your brother's ride.palimpsest

- Seal levels are rising, yes. Sorry, couldn't resist. Well - since it's out of reach, it doesn't matter how far out of reach. A beautiful place nonetheless.Wordsworth
