Next mission will land a drying machine in about 9 months.

I thought comets were fireballs. How do you land on that?
- They become fireballs when they enter earthMaaku
- Ice and rock. You might be thinking of meteorites which are asteroids that enter the atmosphere and burn up.GM278
- Comets form a "tail" when they approach the sun and the ice turns to vaporGM278
- < or thatMaaku
- they're all just ice and dirtmonospaced

dbloc, did you not see Armageddon? Comet, asteroid... they all solid.
- uuuuuu0
something that is not being reported except within scientific circles is the fact that these research missions are returning observations that are completely discrediting the standard "dirty snowball" theory of comets. not only are comet scientists perplexed by the findings and can't explain them through their typical theoretical models they haven implications in a wide variety of cosmology from planetary science, the formation of the solar system, the model of the sun and more.
should watch the videos here to understand more,
https://www.youtube.com/user/Thu…
basically the so called "electric universe" theorists have been predicting these findings for some time and are being verified now.
- interesting, thanks!Maaku
- was about to post 'interesting, thanks!' and noticed maaku uttered my exact sentiment********

The harpoons that were supposed to fire and hold it to the surface didn't fire... but the lander did hit and appears to have bounced (not sure how hard / if any damage)... but it's on the surface and seems to be sending back data but nobody seems to be reporting anything specific yet?...
That would really blow if the thing is fried... 10 years of waiting. :(
Some pics shot from 10km off the surface of the comet:
- the fit itself is so impressive that I still can't wrap my mind around it,
can't wait for more picsgeorgesIII - come on nasa, what about the hi-res 4k color images?ApeRobot
- budget cuts maybe...ApeRobot
- NASA? You've not been paying any attention here, have you? This is something you paid for, ApeRobot.detritus

“The low gravity on Comet 67P, which turns Philae from a fridge-weight to lighter than a feather, is what caused the first long [two hour] bounce” — http://www.theregister.co.uk/201…
- Hard to get my head around that — not the lower weight, as such, just the fact that it came back after bouncing..detritus
- lol so?detritus
- why's it hard to understand?everythin... falls on earth toomonospaced
- but if your'e referring to how something that small can have that much gravity.. yeah, a little mind bogglingmonospaced
- Yeah, I get gravity - I've been subject to it for much of my life, it's just the daintiness in these manoeuvres that bogglesdetritus
- I hear ya

It bounced. Perhaps as high as 1km, it landed someplace else on the comet, perhaps on its side.
The probe works, it's sending back pictures, the harpoons meant to anchor it have not fired.
