YouTube upload artifacts

I have uploaded a video that has no artifacts using h.264/MP4 from After Effects.
YouTube shows quite a lot of smushiness and artifacts, at 1m19s is particularly bad.
Anyone know how to get around this?

nowadays even moire patterns and particles should compress well and look pretty close to the source material, what are the specs of the upload? maybe upload a 1080p and crunch it? does vimeo give the same result?

try the youtube presets from media encoder
AE>File>Export>Add to Adobe Media Encoder
your footage looks really difficult for an encoder to work right, needs lots of Bitrate

using variable bit rate?

and yeah, video doesn't get more complicated/intense to compress than what have going on there! Even 16mm grain I've found to be really hard...

I have it on the highest bitrate VBR.
It's 1280x720 30fps, I will have to try Vimeo.

I rendered it again at 1920 but its still smushy.
Its slightly better on vimo:
