Ukrainian Defense Ministry is claiming they killed around 800 Russian soldiers on the first day of invasion. Russia meanwhile has not acknowledged any casualties at all.
- yuekit1
Just to make things more confusing there is a story (which may or may not be true) about how Russia has "mobile crematoriums" driving around to instantly incinerate any of their soldiers who are killed to cover up the number of deaths.

- His Substack articles have recently been all too ready to pile on the 'yeah but what about the US' train any time conversation about foreign powers comes upBuddhaHat
- ... and to some extent that's fair, but I'm glad to see him make this admission. I just hope he doesn't go off the deep end like Greenwald.BuddhaHat

Syrian war lasted more than 10 years. Roughly one third of a land of Ukraine. The proxy war US held had minimal economic costs for such an operation.
I think US or west is more than happy to prolong this war, let Russia bear the cost and stay distracted.
West will provide arms and militia for guerrilla warfare, keep the whole country simply unusable for Russia.
This seems like the most painful but the only tactic that would tire the invading force.
Meanwhile Putin is trying to be quick and force Ukraine into a treaty without extending this but so far Ukrainian president doesn't look like he's ready to give up yet.
I don't know which one would be better for the civilians living there.
Accept the invasion and live under the Russian rule or keep fighting and maybe get something at the end.- It's a matter of who will force the other one for a treaty and push their conditions.Beeswax

All Ukrainian border guards protecting a tiny island in the Black Sea from Russian invaders were killed yesterday after refusing to surrender to warmonger Vladimir Putin’s forces and defiantly telling a Kremlin warship: ‘Go f**k yourselves!’.
The small contingent of soldiers, reportedly 13 in number, were posted on Snake Island in the Odessa region near NATO ally Romania and were defending the territory after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine early Thursday morning.
In a radio message, the soldiers were told by a sailor on board the vessel: ‘This is Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed.’ However, the Ukrainian troops defiantly refused to give up the territory, and instead replied: 'Go f**k yourselves!’.
The Russian soldiers on radio are heard muttering the curse back at the Ukrainians, before all the border guards were killed in an aerial bombardment. Their deaths were later acknowledged by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
A video circulating on Twitter also appeared to show the moment that the island was shelled. It showed a Ukrainian soldier staring at a camera before a shell landed nearby.

Putin's rating has been slipping for the last 4 years, maybe this was an attempt to recreate 2014 euphoria after annexation of Crimea.
To early to tell, but I'm leaning towards that it will fail

This invasion doesn't make sense. I don't get the why.
It damages Russia. It contradicts the politics that made Russia and China important on the planet in the last 20+ years. It contradicts their stand on respecting the legality of international law.It goes against their politics of capital flow and trade and capitalism. It's absurd.
This will probably lead to a gov change in Russia...change of a leader that has to go anyway because of age.
- putin has gone potty in isolation...
terrified of nato expansion, wants to put a buffer between him and the pesky west.hans_glib - plus he thinks he'll be dead popular at home by throwing his weigh around.

If you're not sure of the Why, When, Who and Where of the Russia/Ukraine conflict this is well worth a listen and frames the conflict within (concerning) global/political perspective.
In essence:
- The west is weak and Mr Putin is taking advantage of this.
- This conflict will be the first of many Russian expansionist goals
- China will be looking very carefully at what Nato and the West does because it has similar expansionist plans.
and so much more...- Moving to the Azores....shapesalad

It's beyond a stupid irony that the supposed trigger for this was the [previously non-existant] possibility of Ukraine joining NATO because they feared a Russia invasion, so Russia's response was to... invade the Ukraine. It would be funny if only it weren't so absolutely not.
- I thought they gave up their Russian nukes in an attempt to join NATO? Or was at least encouraged by NATO to do that, to gain their support?Ianbolton
- No, they gave up their nukes because they had no way to sustain them, and NATO and Russia promised not to invade them for doing so.Nairn
- It weren't not indeedjagara
- Cheers Nairn. I further see the irony now, but it's still completely ridiculousIanbolton

Saw a video of a tank running over a driving civilian car (old man driving). There's no way this was an Ukraine tank. Who the fuck would do this? Fucking pigs.
Luckily the man was dragged out alive but injured out of the crushed car.

"During the fighting in South Ossetia, the Russian Air Force repeatedly attacked Tbilisi and its surrounding areas" (capital of Georgia)Does anyone even remember this? The goal was to if not to annex, but to separate Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia, or at least declare them as independent states. They are still disputed territories.
Replace Abkhazia with Donetsk/Lugansk and basically you have the same war. It will be over in two weeks.
- Don't know. P Putin is much more unhinged this time. To isolated.tank02
