My Specs:
- Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2012)
- OS X 10.10.1
- Dell U2713HM Monitor
- Connected to the U2713HM from my Macbook Pro via a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable
- 2560 x 1440 resolutionMy Problem: I've noticed harsh edges on drop-shadows and gradients with extreme "banding"/ distortion (see attachment). When I set my desktop background to a lighter color everything with a drop-shadow (nearly every application window and piece of text in OS X) looks completely "off".
Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it?

I reduced the sharpness on the dell monitor panel, then all was fine.
google osx and dell monitor model. once i had to install an unsupported driver for a dell monitor. it's weird dell doesn't make those drivers, they just support windows....and apple doesn't write their owns for dell, so some guy with skills online wrote one by himself.

this one I think...some problem with display port and outputting correct rgb values: http://embdev.net/topic/284710
- I'm using this over ride profile too! I saw this when I first bought the monitor but still seeing the issue.studderine

I'm buying a new Macbook Pro today and plan to have it connected to two monitors when I'm using it at home and was worried about retina to 1080p translations.
This post has got me thinking I might want to invest in better monitors. You use its just OSX being weird?
- Well this is $500 dollar monitor specifically made for design, photography, etc.studderine

it's totally ok, I use this with a mbp retina 15'' and a dellu3014.
first I thought it was a mistake to get a dell, because of the blurriness, but after applying that fix it works as expected. The bigger Issue is, that you really get used to the retina thing, so when looking at the normal pixel density screen you start to see the pixels, even if you haven't noticed them for years.
but there was no such thing as an external retina display then, I'm not even sure there is one now. but I thought if I ever buy a monitor again it will be a high pixel density one.
resolution-wise, I set the mbp to full res, that's 3840x2400 pixels on 15''.
the 30'' has 'only' 2560x1600. So actually I have more space on the 15'' screen and tend to make most of the work on the small screen.- still on mavericks I must append. don't know about yosemite yet. and pre mavericks I just needed to change the sharpness thing on the monitor to get a sharp image.uan
- the monitor to get a sharp image.uan
- You should never turn on any sharpness on a monitor. evermonospaced

looks like there is also a fix for yosemite:

I see no banding whatsoever on those images you posted.
- Must be my Dell display because I'm not seeing the banding on screenshot on my Macbook Pro.studderine

Seem like colour profile issue.
Check up on that?- I noticed this happening at my parent's computer and it was just because the monitor sucked and was only 6 bitmonospaced

Looks like many reviews of Dell screens say they are using BGR panels instead of RGB ones and that it messes with Mac. Odd.
- lol, wut?monospaced
- I'm not sure either...yet! LOLstudderine
- I know BGR for storing actual data, but how that directly relates to hardware, I am unaware.ETM
- Honestly, I barely understand how changing the order of the information is more efficient, but it appearantly can be.ETM

Bumpity.

I know some dell monitor you can change the colour gamut profile right on the monitor manue.
Is it that?- Yeah, I may need to do that when I get back to the home office today.studderine
