when you've got some downtime cherish it, relax, take a vacation - don't freak out about not having work, work will come and soon you'll have no time to spare.
I wasted too much free time worrying about the next gig

start every day by leaving home, if only for a brief moment.

Start networking and taking on freelance briefs now.
You'll never be completely ready.

Set reasonable expectations and a path to get there. I disagree that things will just land in your lap, you have to constantly hunt for work. That's the dilemma with freelance/small businesses - you work your ass off to get the work, then work your ass to do the work, then lose marketing/potential while you completed the work...and it starts all over.
It really depends on your expectations and what you want. Don't think you'll make more money and have more free time, there are trade offs. There's a reason 99% of the population works for other people.

No regrets ever having left that well paying job in 2008 when the market crashed.
The advice I'd give myself is to make sure to stay driven and don't become obsolete.
- Wasn't a dead end job, but I wouldn't have the roster of clients I do now (and I took a dip in pay)bklyndroobeki
