The most well balanced overall german experience possible. Art, architecture, bars, friendly peeps(is this out of the question),

Berlin is kind of the obvious answer, I suppose. The main reason I went was architectural - primarily Tempelhof and the Reichstag with some older East Berlin thrown in as well.
Also, Berlin has a Ramones museum which instantly became #1 on my things to visit.

I really think Hamburg is the city to visit. It's got the largest harbor in Europe directly on the Elbe and delicious Bismarckhering brötchen. When the shipments of coffee come into the city, you can smell it all the way till Altona. You can get a real German experience there, much more than in Berlin.

- Haven't been to either but I can imagine this is true. Berlin is Germany's NYC - not really representative of the nation.hans_glib
- I'm off to Heidelberg and the forest of the Nibelung in a few weeks... lots of breweries to try, cycling to be done, sausage to be eaten...hans_glib
- >largest harbor in Europe
No its not, get your facts straight. It's Rotterdammilfhunter

Was in Berlin 2 years ago, thought it was a brilliant city to visit. Tonnes of museums, great food, friendly folk, and very easy to get around.
- Although it probably wouldn't represent the most authentic of German experiences, it is one of the truly great International cities.Bilious_Fog

The ICE-Train (Inter City Express) takes only 1h40m from Hamburg to Berlin so I’d recommend you visit both...

If you have the time, I totally recommend Munich, as well as Cologne.

munich and berlin are two extremes when it comes to big cities in germany.
the cliché, which has some truth to it, breaks down to this: berlin is rather dirty, big, chaotic, fucked-up, poor, hip, ugly, not-really-germany and constantly changing and self questioning.
munich tends to be clean, well ordered, posh, rich, conservative, confident, proud, german (sorry: bavarian!).I’ve been to munich several times and I always found it to be refreshing (coming from berlin): ticket machines in the subway give change to 20 euro bills! trains arrive on time! you don’t get constantly begged for a cigarette or a few cents! no drugged up party tourists pissing in your doorway at 2 pm on a sunday! no army of idiotic 22 year old hipsters trying to out-cool each other! the air is so much fresher! munich has beer gardens, the socially accepted way to get pissed in the middle of the day. it has the isar, a river that has been renaturated, running through the middle of the city, which is an amazing place to chill. in an hour or two you can go hiking or skiing in the beautiful nature of the alps.
FUCK, WHY AM I STILL STUCK IN THIS SHITHOLE?
- Because the Munich creative/advertising... scene is nowhere near Berlin's level. ;)Continuity

I live in Hamburg, definetly worth a visit.
I could show you some spots on my donkey and have some beers.

As a recent visitor, rather than resident, Hamburg and Berlin are great cities.
Hamburg might be better if it's hot.
Munich is nice but less interesting in my opinion (not worth much).
- lived in hamburg for a year, we had one hot day, rest of the time it was raining. even in the winter, no snow, just really really cold rainpressplay
- yeah, I meant Hamburg might feel cooler than Berlin if there's a heatwave.Fax_Benson

'Munich is nice but less interesting in my opinion (not worth much).'
As a former resident (god, I miss it!), Munich's big draw is the lifestyle. The south of Germany has a much more pronounced joie-de-vivre than the north, or even in the west (like Düsseldorf, where I'm living until the end of month ... ironically to move to Berlin). Munichers will take every available opportunity to leg it for the Englischer Garten to sun bathe, to grill on the Isar (or swim in it, if they're particularly brave) or to hang out at their favourite bar to knock back an Aperol Spritz or two. Munich just generally feels a lot more relaxed and easy-going than in other German cities.
It's also got a tonne more green space.
- Also, you can't knock a city that's got a strong urban surfing community!Continuity
- Also, you've got easy access to some gorgeous lakes outside the city, and easy access to skiing and snowboarding in the winter.Continuity
- agree with all of that. Didn't say Munich isn't nice, just seemed to be less going on than in Hamburg + BerlinFax_Benson
- This is true. Munich takes the German reputations for orderliness and predictability to a completely different level.Continuity
