What the Mueller report seems to show is that incompetence and random fuck ups are a lot more common than big conspiracies.
It makes me think, what if the reason Trump acted so weak and servile in front of Putin was actually because of the Russia investigation?
Maybe he watched shitty American cable news 24/7 for a year and eventually came to believe that Russia might actually have something on him.
If you are Donald Trump you've probably done all kinds of shady shit over the course of your life and hearing the press repeat over and over that they had blackmail material on him he might have eventually started to believe it.

^^ In the report they did reveal that there was a RU business man who wrote Cohen about tapes [context below]... he then told Mueller that he discovered the tapes were fake, but never told Trumpland - so to offer a different scenario that fits the information we do know: what if the Russians wanted Trump to believe there were tapes?
Context:
According to a footnote in the special counsel's report, which was released Thursday, Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer, received a text from Russian businessman Giorgi Rtskhiladze in October 2016 that said: "Stopped flow of tapes from Russia but not sure if there's anything else. Just so you know..."Rtskhiladze told Mueller that "tapes" referred to "compromising tapes of Trump rumored to be held by persons associated with the Russian real estate conglomerate Crocus Group," which had helped host the 2013 Miss Universe Pageant, according to the report (the pageant was owned by Trump for years). Cohen told the special counsel that he spoke to Trump about the issue after receiving Rtskhiladze's text.
Rtskhiladze also told prosecutors that he was told the tapes were fake, but that he didn't convey that to Cohen.

Chomsky went on to say that he believes focusing too heavily on Russia may cost Democrats dearly next November.
“The Democrats invested everything in this issue,” Chomsky said. “Well, turned out there was nothing much there. They gave Trump a huge gift. In fact, they may have handed him the next election. ... That’s a matter of being so unwilling to deal with fundamental issues, that they’re looking for something on the side that will somehow give political success.”
