I have just passed one of the hardest tests that I have ever had to endure in my life. I am now a CGSB Level II Radiographic Inspector. My job is to develop film in a mobile dark room and interpret the image to a particular code. Basically the ultimate art Director.
I use to work in the advertising world for about 6 years as a Web Developer specializing in Flash, this is how I started coming to QBN. I loved my time working in the industry but left about 4 years ago and have not been able to shake the habit of checking out the Pic of the Day.
I am posting this because when I first got out of the industry I did not know what I was going to do with myself. I felt that I did not have any other skills that would be marketable in other industries.
I had no idea that my current type of job even existed and wanted to let anyone who was frustrated with working in the industry know that there are other options if you decide to jump ship. I have been trying to get this ticket for over 2 years and now that I have it I feel much more secure in my new career.
Has anyone else moved out of the industry, maybe found something that they liked better?

Good for you! Inspiring. I think about it every day..

How old are you? I think I am too old to change careers now.
- eryx3
just turned 36, one of my co-workers got into this field when he was in his early 50's and is fast tracking to a comfortable retirement.
- same but with a construction safety inspector, uncle in law got into it late 40's and fast tracking to a comfortable retirement. Barely worked before that._niko

I salute you sir.

Cool!
What is your job exactly, i dont understand?
- When things are welded they have to follow certain code for flaws and inconsistencies. We take x-rays of welds and make sure there are no flawseryx
- what made you pick this field? -- seems obscureGnash

Great post. Congrats on your new career path!
...And it's cool that you're still checking out QBN, yeah!
- bainbridge0
Nice story, congrats.
Did you leave because Flash was dying?
How did you find this new field?
- bainbridge2
Don't forget Chick of the Day too.
- bainbridge0
Do you have better pay now?
- Yes. When it is busy you work insane hours even now that it is slow I am still making more and since I have this ticket I make even more.eryx
- reanimate0
How do you get started in the Radiographic Inspection field? Do they just hire anyone? Are there any health risks?
- eryx1
When it is busy they hire all sorts of people. You can bet when oil is back up to $90 a barrel they are going to be hurting for guys.
You work with radiation so yes very large health risks and lots of safety stuff. You also have to deal with all the dangers of the oil and gas field which is a lot. Also the extreme cold is a bit of a downer.
Last year less than 4km from where I was working a guy got attacked by a cougar and got his ear ripped so you have to be aware of that sort of stuff.
But all in all it is better than dealing with Account managers and Art Directors.
- bahahaha Cougar mauling < dealing with art directors.dorkKn1ght
- I was reading this and thought" he must be Canadian" then I check the profile....yup lol_niko
- < story like that Liam Neeson film, The Grey -- except with cougars instead of wolvesGnash
- Radiation never hurt anyone.BK

Debating this more and more these days.
Approaching 40 and losing the creative drive.

Anyone interested in a new career?
Long hours in dangerous conditions for tons of money?

Hey eryx,
Just wanted to check in and see how you're doing. Oil and Gas has not been super hot lately but I still am very curious about your new career.

If I liked coffee (it's vile) I would have ditched design long ago and opened a pretentious coffee shop. Now in my darker hours I think of going back to school for something like furniture design.
- do it. Furniture design for pretentious coffee shops._niko
- You should not go back to school for furniture design, get an apprenticeship with a furniture designer or shop.utopian
