Situation:
Someone you know emails you and wants a logo. You're not really friends, but you'd stop and talk to them if you ran into them at a party. They trust you to do it and you know you're the first person they thought to ask.
This logo is for a passion project and you know they have no money to spend on it.
You don't know what they can do for you in return, so do you just go ahead and do it and hope they can help you out in the future?

No. I recommend discussing some sort of payment.

In these situations I offer people two options:
1) Discuss payment at a special rate, but you treat it like a regular project.
2) Do it for free. Do something good and appropriate, but treat it as a choice to stretch yourself creatively, and not have the client shoot it down/fuck around until the idea is shit. Do something you'd be really proud of.
