- Isn't there a running joke that *everything* causes cancer, by California standards?Nairn
- There's always a joke by people who refuse to care about their health based on their feeling that science doesn't matter. They're nutrition deniers.CyBrainX
- I would hope maybe a side effect for a short period would be being able to move things with your mindPhanLo
- If you place a crystal on top of it for 10 minutes it will absorve the cancer. It will be then safe to eat.palimpsest

Beijing students' response last night to accusations that there are 'foreign forces' at play in this weekend's protests
- The CCP and their army of trolls will use this excuse everytime there's a protest or uprising somewhere.yuekit

- For instance official line of the Chinese government is that the 2019 HK protests involving millions of people were a product of CIA color revolution.yuekit

Something different since the endless China bashing gets boring after a while. I thought this was the best defense of China's system I've read, or at least it's thought provoking...
The Confucian State: An Ideal Type of Governance for China?
The West gets China wrong: because it does not understand the nature of the Confucian state. Beijing could complete its historic transformation by breaking completely with Marxism and acknowledge the Confucian state as its ideal type.
- The author is not really defending the existing system so much trying to preserve what he sees as positive aspects while finding a way to fundamentally changeyuekit
- some things, which he justifies by appealing to Confucianism.yuekit
- These Neo-Confucianist ideas have been around for a while but what's surprising is that Xi Jinping seems to support this to some extent, including abandoningyuekit
- foundational tenants of Marxism.

- The two films they cite as positive examples in that Global Times article: The Wandering Earth and Wolf Warrior 2yuekit
- Wandering Earth is an OK sci-fi movie, Wolf Warrior is basically China's version of Rambo. Unfortunately for all of China's achievements it can't compareyuekit
- with better Western productions, such as recent TV series. Or with South Korean cinema which has mass appeal but also creative/ innovative.yuekit
- was avatar 2 woke at all?
LOL Wolf Warrior. everyone in this thread should watch that movie.pango

In reality according to this new study, China would probably lose a war over Taiwan against the combined forces of Taiwan, USA and Japan. But at the same time the war would likely devastate the US military and damage US power and influence in the world.
- Look at russia/ukraine, you can literally walk across from russia to ukraine. Look at china/taiwan - that's quiet a distance of typhoon blasted deep ocean.shapesalad
- China can attack, but not sustain a war over such a distance of ocean.shapesalad
- True but the downside is it would be much more difficult to supply Taiwan vs Ukraine.yuekit
- Same logic applies for supplying Chinese troops so far out from the mainland.shapesalad
- The situation would become a siege, but with Japan + USA + rest of world backing up Taiwan.shapesalad
- Plus russian style sanctions on China would soon ruin it at a a local level and cause more problems for CCP.shapesalad
- Yeah I have trouble believing they would go for it, at least in the near future. Seems out of character for CCP leadership to start a war that would have suchyuekit
- an unpredictable outcome, would devastate China's economy etc. I also suspect there would be large-scale protests like with COVID.yuekit
- Great link. I'd wager China isn't setting foot in Taiwan because the second they step in that shit, most of the world will be defending Taiwan for chip reasons.garbage

China has extended the olive branch to Western democracies and global capitalists alike, promising a new era of detente after the coercive “wolf warrior” diplomacy of the last five years.
Vice-premier Liu He, the economic plenipotentiary of Xi Jinping’s China, told a gathering of business leaders and ministers in Davos that China is back inside the tent and eager to restore the money-making bonhomie of the golden years.
“We must let the market play the fundamental role in the allocation of resources, and let the government play a better role. Some people say China will go for the planned economy. That’s by no means possible,” he said.
