Vancouver got a new logo for $8k, and people are losing their shit.
"With all due respect to the designer, it appears that they went, found a font and typed it out, and put some colour to it, and we have a new logo for $8,000,"
"My eight-year-old could do that,"
"Logo that cost the City of #Vancouver $8,000 vs. logo I made in 2 seconds on Microsoft Word, for comparison," tweeted one aspiring designer.

They also paid $239,000 for this back in 2009, so they're getting a bargain!

yeah but with a logo, you don't pay $8000 for that little graphic, you pay 8k for someone/team to explore, test, refine present the best 'answer' / 'solution' to the set of requirements and problems that the desired logo should meet.
sure you could pay anyone with a computer $8 to use word to type out various fonts in 1hr and pick the best logo from that.
But what you're not seeing is the trying out of all other possible answers, and their rejection, accumulating in the conclusion that a logo that looks like it was typed in word and could cost $8 is the best solution.
Because.. well.. it get's everyone talking on twitter.
And if they wanted that to go international, they can pay me $800,000 and I'll type it out in comic sans.
That would get them international exposure and social media activity worth $m's!!!!!

Fuck, $8k?? We've charged way more for smaller businesses. This type of shit, no matter how crappy it looks, devalues professionals....

In fact just recently the greatly admired and revered Professor Dr I.C Yadick of Harvard, Yale, Oxford notoriety has, after much work and deliberation, formulated a "Golden Graphic Design Logo Ratio", thusly:

^ yes, it bothers me that some companies spend so much money to update a logo across their brand when the old one did just fine.
This isn't enough of a change to make it worth it unless they have a strategy to change everything.

Its a shit logo.
It says nothing about the city of Vancouver
It isn't indestinct.
It isn't memorable.Some committee of dickheads picked it because it was "clean", easy to say yes to because they didnt know how to say something bad about it.
It's not a success when you say yes to it. It's a success when you REPRESENT THE FUCKNIG POPULATION AND CULTURE YOU ARE BUYING A FUCKING LOGO FOR.

Just to be clear, I posted this thinking that the agency probably got screwed at $8k. These projects, if done correctly, are worth a lot more.
