It's time to upgrade when your machine is too old to be eligible for the latest osx upgrade - late 2008.
Any recommendation? Reluctant to go PC only because the quartz technology which is still top quality over pc. Plus I'm using sketch now which is at this moment native.
Cheers

Size? Purpose?

Depends on your needs, but my choice would be to max out a previous generation MBP. The one with all the traditional ports and SD card slot, etc.

or wait another 4 years for a new refresh of MacBooks

A 2015 15" Macbook pro is a good bet. I briefly had a 2016 touch bar model but promptly returned it for a refurb 2015. Runs like a dream, has all the i/o I need, and can run a 4k monitor.
- Yeah, think of this as a safe option. Heard the new model is garbage, I don't know what they were thinking with the touch bar...Bullitt

The fact that people are recommending 2 year old Mac laptops should tell you something about your prospects with that platform.
If you're looking to switch. Lenovo's ThinkPads are a good PC laptop.
- I'd wouldn't buy the first version of the TB MacBooks, overpriced and potential for bugginess. maybe this years will be a lot more reliable.fourth
- I am sure they will react to the vibes. or at least you'd think so. although not their market anymore, creative professional chatter/gossip filters down andfadein11
- pollutes their consumer markets.fadein11

Genuinely curious: what is it about Apple's Quartz graphics that surpasses PC graphics tech? I've never heard that.

Sketch is a good reason to be using a mac at the moment.
Do hope they'll do a version for PC though!Best laptop going at the moment IMO is the Dell XPS 15.
You can grab one (they are rare though) at the dell outlet for about £1700. i7 4k TouchScreen 1tb SSD with 32GB Ram.
From the normal dell site they are just over 2k.Chek out the reviews the dell XPS15 gets on youtube. fol raving about it when new, 6 months then 1 year on - still loving it and the screen quality.
Beat that deal Apple!!!
ThinkPads are pretty decent little things too.
They'll last years and are pretty indestructable. Some of the range come with spill keyboards so you can literally pour a beer onto the laptop and it'll drain right through.- My friend has a couple of i7 XPS 13s at his engineering firm, with 4k touchscreens, he's using 4k drone footage to render 3d buildings with them, no probs.BuddhaHat
- It will probably be my next laptop after my current 2015 MBP.BuddhaHat
- Wow, thats pretty interesting about the capability of the 13 inch ones. They are only dual core not quad core too.microkorg
- I've been eyeing up their 15's (that are 14 size) as they are quad core for Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and for Music Production too.....microkorg
- ... but sounds like the 13 might suffice.
Seemingly the Microsoft Surface Book is pretty capable too. Been watching loads of YT reviews.microkorg - you really don't need the apple hw to run macossted

Sincerelly, buy a nice PC laptop and install MacOs and Sketch running on VmWare
- what's the RAM consumption on running VMWare these days?BuddhaHat
- Hardly matters since it's not unrealistic to have a machine with 32-64 gb of memory. :)monospaced
