Tesla is reportedly under investigation by the DOJ and SEC over its mysterious 'Project 42'
The SEC is also investigating whether the project involved using company funds for CEO Elon Musk's personal benefit, the Journal said.
Tesla's board had also inquired into Musk's involvement in the project, and the amount of time any employees had spent on it, according to the Journal's July report.
It can be illegal to use company funds for personal expenses — especially when dealing with a publicly traded company. If a public company were found to have used company funds for an executive's personal use it could lead to an IRS investigation and lawsuits from shareholders.
It's not clear if the building project is still in the works, or whether the glass order was ever delivered, the Journal reported on Wednesday.

Biden’s tweet, in which he said he would be supporting his wife in rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles, generated nearly 29 million impressions. Musk, who also tweeted his support for the Eagles, generated a little more than 9.1 million impressions before deleting the tweet in apparent frustration.
In the wake of those losses — the Eagles to the Kansas City Chiefs, and Musk to the president of the United States — Twitter’s CEO flew his private jet back to the Bay Area on Sunday night to demand answers from his team.

TO HIS MANY fans, Elon Musk is the future. Whether that future means self-driving cars, brain chip implants, an “everything app,” a colonized Mars, or all of the above, they believe in the billionaire’s ambitions — and, crucially, his ability to bring them to fruition.
But why? Musk has an uneven track record as both innovator and entrepreneur. it started with childish name-calling on Twitter two weeks ago, when Elon Musk called my organisation “evil” and me personally a “rat”. It has since escalated to a lawsuit filed against the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), which I founded and run, in a California court last week.
The CCDH exists to research online hate and disinformation, and hold social media companies accountable for the erosion of human rights and civil liberties. Our mission is to stem the tide of racism, antisemitism, harms to children, climate denial, anti-LGBTQ+ hate, health misinformation and many other dangers to society.
Our reporting has shown that, under his watch, the number of tweets containing slurs has risen by up to 202%; that tweets linking LGBTQ+ people to “child grooming” have more than doubled; demonstrated that climate denial content and accounts are surging; and revealed Twitter’s failure to act on hate posted by Twitter Blue subscribers. Members of Twitter’s own trust and safety council have resigned, citing CCDH findings, and our research has been widely reported by news outlets around the world.
