- Is it because I'm avoiding the news I heard nothing about this before it happened or was it all 'under the radar'?webazoot
- Normally its weeks of articles and programs if the moon is going to look a hair bigger then normal. For this nothing.webazoot

Oh Shit! I didn't realise til just now, having checked - SpaceX is intending to send actual humans up to the ISS this week - I was under the impression this was still a dry run for a crewed flight, to happen later in the year.
It's odd - I've read a few articles in the normal press about this recently and have glossed over this very important fact, having been convinced it was something other.
Fucking cool!

Mysterious X-37B space plane lands after record 780 days in orbit

"An unmanned X-37B space plane landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, wrapping up a record 780 days in orbit, the US Air Force said Sunday. The mission broke the mysterious plane's own record by spending more than two years in space."

- Because they are immense and brilliant and always there, steady and predictable and awe inspiring. It’s almost impossible not to yearn for meaning in them.monospaced
- ^my first ever agreement with monohotroddy
- There is no meaning, of course. To derive meaning and then act upon it would be a laughably stupid thing.monospaced
- The human brain is wired for pattern recognition and modelling interactions, so we project meaning and significance and intent on inanimate things.i_monk

- Neat! I wonder how one 'drops' something from something tiny onto something not really huge, and gravity-heavy? I presume it was 'flicked' or something?.Nairn
- yeah, 'dropped' is probably not correct. it 'hit' the astroid with a target marker. amazing precision though to get within 10m of an astroid.sarahfailin

So we all know that the movie Interstellar had a 'true' rendering of a Black Hole, and I recall a lot of editorial implying it was the first time it'd been done. Clearly they meant 'in a movie', rather than generally.
It turns out that how a Black Hole should look (visually, upclose - not with radio, from afar as today) was actually modelled way back in 1978 - https://blogs.futura-sciences.co…
The one in Interstellar should've looked a lot more bezerk than it ended up being, with extreme doppler shifting making the result lop-sided and torn
- Well, I guess none of these actually show a black hole, rather .. https://consequenceo…Nairn
