Rejecting Projects for Moral Reasons

Have you done it? Just passed a project on that was geared to selling to the military contractor, Raytheon, Lockheed, crew.
The weird thing is I would likely (depending on circumstances) take a project that was for the US armed forces (army, navy etc), but when it comes to the private profiteers I couldn't do it.
I understand there is some moral ambiguity/hypocrisy there, but I just couldn't see myself doing the project and feeling good about it.

sure, i've done it several times. moreover in the last ten years i don't work with anybody from the government or funded by it.

Yep, anything horse racing or greyhound racing. Have turned down a bit of work due to my moral stance on it.
I priced myself out of a big tobacco job before.
Theres always going to be hypocrisy in taking a moral stance in choosing what you work on. Everything is so interconnected.
One client is an Arts organisation that is directly funded by a gambling syndicate. Gets murky real quick

Yes, plenty. My experience is that people are more than understanding if you aren't a cunt about it.

I wish I had. Did a big job for British American Tobacco back in the day. Everyone in the meeting chain smoked, was Simpsons-coloured and there were free-for-all platters of every kind of cig.

I turned down a Vape-related job recently but mostly because I don't understand it and thought the clients might be douchey bros.

I usually ask for a very large day-rate and used that to sooth my injured moral soul during my off hours...

Kudos to you, wagshaft. I would do the same.

Late 90s freelancing, I used to design softcore "tease" porn DVD covers. It was shit money. Dude said he was getting into hardcore stuff. Parted ways. I don't know about the morality of it all, honestly just weirded me out. I didn't wanna be the porn guy. How do you even show that in a portfolio?
- thumb_screws2
@DRIFTMONKEY About 2 years after finishing design school I had a successful interview with a company in the sex industry that wanted an in-house designer to rebrand all their stuff. Dildos, fetish gear etc... Remuneration was above the average for the time ( early 2000's). I almost took the job but had the same reservations about how my folio would end up. A folio full of dildo packaging and buttplugs was probably going to limit a heap of future opportunities.
- Oddly, in today's sex-positive climate, this really wouldn't be much of an issue. In fact — unless I'm mistaken — I think some Durex campaigns won ...Continuity

- Yeah would be different now. The toys and gear I would of morally be fine with, but some of the porn they distributed was pretty questionable.thumb_screws

I don't work with betting companies.
Except that one time I did, because it was for a regular client, and that other time because it was for bingo, and bingo's harmless, right? Right?

My wifes best friend is married to a client of mine. He has admitted to cheating on her countless times (to his wife, not me - he doesn't know that I know) and has completely lost the plot. Screams at her, is banging some other single mom from the school, and regularly goes out and has one night stands. He has blamed it on the fact that he hates church, and the fact that his wife takes the kids once a week on a Sunday.
Anyway, we do quite a bit of work together, but I had to tell him to go fuck himself. He should man up and just fucking handle the situation like a grown up instead of making his wife and kids life a total misery... what a waste.

about 20 years ago I knew this super shady dude who was a bouncer/bartender/DJ at a bunch of strip clubs.
He kept pressing me to help him start a webcam site with him.
At the time in my life, it sounded like a good idea. He knew the girls, I knew the people who could build websites.
After a few meetings, I decided it wouldn't be a good idea to go into business with him. Last I heard he was in jail for dealing coke.

I just recently finished a site for adult toys. I was a little on the fence about doing it, for portfolio reasons as well. though the design was very tasteful. The lady was a friend of a friend so i just did it and turned out great. She referred me for 5 other sites, not adult related.

Anything but cults/churches related work.

too many ideals too few clients

I just did a huge campaign for a client who's pro 2nd amendment. Even though in principle i'm against guns, the slogan-like response of the Left on the issue is taking the debate further away from any sensible solution and so i was intrigued that the client wants to start a debate even if poking fun of human hypocrisy. After some filming, the steadycam guy decided to throw a tantrum about low rate then knowing there isn't more money, started playing morality game. After some debate i realized most people who play morality card can't reason out themselves out of a trash can much less talk about complex ideas involving human integrity.

They was a 'stop the boats' campaign that came through a studio I worked in Melbourne, Australia. Nobody wanted to touch it.

During the financial crash at the end of the last decade, I worked for Sky... a lot.
So I've taken the Murdoch shilling.
As a lover of music, I think the lowest point during this time, was doing some brand and event work for a sub-Xfactor piece of shit sow they produced.
I might as well have been working for a pro-cancer organisation.
- I've just thought about the work I did back then and downvoted myself.Wolfboy
