There's a factor in the shockingly fast fall of Afghanistan that I don't think anyone in the Biden admin considered, which is that the US has more than a few major, existential debates looming over the popular discourse right now.
Climate change, the census and its ramifications, the ongoing pandemic issues and the ideas of governance that are being debated alongside them - to have a 20-year international failure dropped right in the middle is just a bad call.
I'm sure it was meant for theatrics - the same way "70% by July 4" was going to signal America's re-opening, instead we have a national clusterfuck of outbreaks alongside the chances that 9/11 will feature the burning of the US embassy in Kabul.
The general US population has been under such psychological strain for more than a few years now, I'm not sure how much more it can stand and the politicians are showing absolutely no regard for what could be considered the only thing keeping this country actually together - the resilience of the citizens to not lose it completely.

Costa Rica’s per-capita income is a sixth that of the U.S., and they spend a fraction of what we do on health care, but life expectancy there is longer. That happened when they made public health central to the delivery of medical care. Every Costa Rican is assigned a local primary-health-care team, which includes a physician, a nurse, and a trained health worker known as an ATAP, who visits every household in the community at least once a year. Earlier this year, Atul Gawande accompanied Leonardo Herrera, an ATAP in a small mountain town, on his home visits. “There was nothing magical about the care I saw that day,” Gawande writes. “Herrera wasn’t a saint.
