anyone use the affinity suite against adobe?
i was using CS 6 until i had to recently upgrade, and in doing so lost use of the creative suite.
i didn't have any ongoing projects at the moment and am considering taking the opportunity to switch over, as i don't like the cloud in pricing or concept.
anyway, thoughts/impressions if there are any? are they good programs? stable? i don't need all the bells and whistles with what i use this stuff for.

just do it. get a trial and see for yourself. Affinity > Adobe.
Haven't had the need for Adobe in more than 3 years

Affinity is cheap enough that buying all their apps is basically like paying for one month of Creative Cloud, especially if you catch them on sale.
They're worth having around and learning even if you do have to use CC with clients. Affinity Designer outperforms Illustrator on old hardware as well.

Yeah you can use Affinity for 90% of the projects u do, from logos, branding to even app design. Some features from Illustrator missing (blend, warp, etc.), but overall, I would say Affinity is very useful. Very easy to learn, takes a few hours I guess, it's very very fast on Macs and they have great apps for iPad too.
Start with some simple projects first, to get used to it. Then do the full switch.
*if you work in a team with other Adobe users, this is useless tho' but for freelancers Affinity is a real choice rn

I would say that designer is not quite up to illustrator (at least for the way i work) and I find myself having to go back to illustrator for some jobs, tho less and less as i find ways to work around issues.
publisher is quite as good as quirk and indesign and all i need. ditto photo.
obvs you need to allow some time to get used to the new way of working as they are similar yet different and it takes time to readjust to new key commands etc

Affinity Photo is really good but can have problems with some types of more complicated existing Ps files - primarily with mask combinations, like with masks on groups with masked layer effects inside - it can apply the group mask to everything inside and make a bollocks of the layer effects and ruin your image. A unique problem, maybe, but it's something to test before jumping ship entirely.
- Not surprising to me; Most PSD clones fall short with complex files. I use Layer Comps *a lot* and that isn't fully supported from Affinity Photo.evilpeacock

Downloaded the Designer demo since my CS3 won't install on Catalina. Gotta say, I'm really impressed! Feels very much like Illustrator, and I basically just went right to work with it. Contrasted to Inkscape, which feels very awkward. There's another tool called Krita which I need to try in the vector space.
Gonna get the Photo demo too, and see how it pans out. I do very little Photoshop/Illustrator type of work these days, but when you need it, you need it. I'll probably get both if Photo is better than Gimp (which shouldn't be hard).
- Designer and Photo run circles around the open source/free equivalents like Inkscape/The Gimp.
I also use Acorn for PSD-level things and it's great.evilpeacock - Gimp and Inkscape, while open source and thus free....are very awkward to work with. Not sure if it is being used to Adobe or bad UIdkoblesky

If you use InDesign for anything serious you'll be disappointed. I really wanted Publisher to replace it for the price.
You might suspect it's not as good as InDesign because every single comparison list has "cost" as the top reason to get Publisher.
- Totally depends what you do though. If you're a light InD user, it will probably suffice.nb
- i design books so indesign is pretty importantcolin_s
- I haven't given Publisher a spin, but it's super new so no surprise it is lacking. ID is really deep for those that need it.evilpeacock
- Publisher is still missing some of the functionality and easy shortcuts of InDesign, and combined with the unfamiliar UI/workflow it's an obstacle.i_monk

Fun fact: you can script image filters in affinity photo via Live Procedural Filers.
This code gives you a halftone screen pattern:
((sin(((ry+rx)/2)/w*360*n)*a+1/4...
where a is the amplitude (contrast) and n is the frequency
