All I've ever used is an external HD and Time Machine.
Thinking, it's time to try to use another way to backup my computer.
I have 500GB on my computer and another couple 100GB on drives.
What's the best way / service to back this up, how much does it cost?

- Computer Backup
$60/Computer/Year
unlimited data.grafician - That's surprisingly cheap. If I hadn't of heard of them prior, I'd be a bit sus.
Is this what you use?Nairn - sorry but if you guys don't know backblaze for cloud backup this thread is overgrafician
- I over-deploy double negatives.Nairn
- < yep. Been using them for years. Love how you can also access files if need be from anywhere.fyoucher1
- Wow. Backblaze always seemed pricy but this is awesome. I’m a Dropbox guy, but this is a great secondary optionhardhat
- +1 for Backblaze for both personal/business; Spring for the longer than 30 day versioning if you do a lot of revising of things.evilpeacock

but always keep a local external drive with all your stuff, just in case
- ideaist0
- fuck your dropbox, even with a Gbps connection still slow af, try to backup 100GB of data...I mean 5GB .PSD files, or raw photo filesgrafician
- for raw photo files flickr.com is still very good up to 1TBgrafician
- Works a charm™ over here.ideaist
- lol Dropbox can use 100% of your internet bandwidth. Your connection is slow, not Dropbox.Bennn
- yeah, it's good for small files, but like I said try to backup huge .PSD files lolgrafician
- use dropbox to sync iphone photos, but for real .PSD or video GB files, might as well get an external drive and ship it overseas for a projectgrafician
- @Benn I live in Romania, we're #12 the US is #40 https://testmy.net/r…grafician
- in Europe we're like top 5 for internet speeds, fuck you ISP lolgrafician

I use Dropbox since many years now, i've try a few other and DB is def the best out there. They have the best syncing. I have 2TB of space, all my files are on Dropbox. I currently use 1,3TB of my 2TB.
But yeah, the first upload take a while... uploading those 600GB will take a few days.

btw AWS outages rn, dribbble is down...
keep using dropbox lol

I use Dropbox, but I don’t consider it a backup. It just syncs my work so I can access from anywhere. It’s risky to back up external drives to Dropbox - don’t do it
Backboaze for a remote backup of all disks
Time machine as a copy of each machine.
Identical local copy’s on two 4TB drives (using carboncopy)

So Backblaze it is.

- Yes but use zip250, it holds 2.5x as much. I store all my emails on these no problemonb
- Nostalgic as fuck, eh?ideaist
- these really were great at the time.fadein11
- and jazz drive for backupfadein11
- click click death..._niko
- these were the shiznit once a time ago.utopian
- Haha...my entire portfolio for grad school is on a pile of these...somewhereformed
- @fadein ‘bout pissed myself. I still have a jazz drive and 1/2 dozen cartridges in a box somewhere. The carts were super expensive! I think that optic drivesGreen_Pork
- and better tech came out the week after I bought (overpaid for) it.Green_Pork
- @green_pork haha, we always used jazz for work backups back in the day at my first agency.
They were a bit cumbersome.
Zips were a delight to use, so fast forfadein11 - the time. Spread those early mac worms like wildfire though :)fadein11
- Those disks would oftenly faili_was
- I use Jaz or Syquest.jagara

All my data in one folder on my Hardrive
-
That same data is backup in real time on DropboxIf Dropbox explode, I still have my data.
If I explode, I still have my data. It's pretty simple. I never have any problems syncing files with Dropbox.
- File-syncing isn’t a backup. It’s fine until it’s notGnash
- If a virus corrupts your local files, those corrupted files are synced everywhereGnash
- If your local ‘explodes’ and Dropbox doesn’t disconnect properly your remote files can get pooched tooGnash
- i will meditate on this. I'll be back in 40 days.Bennn
- Bennn1
@gnash
if Dropbox doesnt detect the hard drive, it ask you where it is and of you want to change its location. It happen to me multiple time. There's no way DB will automatically delete all your stuff because he cant see the source folder.
- From Dropbox: “ If the external drive is disconnected from the computer while Dropbox is running, there's a small—but real—chance that the app will ...Gnash
- ... will start deleting files before realizing that the entire drive has been removedGnash
- It’s not impossible. But now way you should trust externals to DBGnash
- 0 Risk doesnt exist, i guessBennn

I've always used external hard rives and inevitably theyy always crap out after a year or two, so I'm always scrambling to save them before i lose my work.
I'm trying to move everything to the cloud, so I've moved to dropbox for my working files but was looking for an archive solution for all my old stuff and it looks like back blaze is the way to go.
Does it backup dropbox files or do I need to do that manually?
- not WDs mategrafician
- again backblaze for cloud, are u guys don't know what's best?!grafician
- Backblaze play well with DropboxGnash
- Backblaze has a more archive friendly offering for archiving with the B2 Cloud product. Backup is not equal to archiving!evilpeacock

Carbonite has been great for me for years now. I have several terabytes backed up now. When I got a new computer I had them send me an ssd with my discarded computer's backup, very convenient. Good support, too, and very reasonable cost-wise (can't recall, but less than $100/yr for unlimited storage).
- slappy0
We use Gmail for our work emails, Gsuite comes with 1tb for each user as we have a business plan. I just downloaded the backup and sync app and told it which folders to sync to the cloud. Pretty easy.
I use dropbox for my personal backups and family files.

Online Storage (Dropbox, Google Drive) and Online Backup (Backblaze) are different?
answer from Backblaze: https://www.backblaze.com/online…
- Bennn0
you guys are almost convincing me... Maybe Backblaze would be a better solution for me. It's 60$USD /year for unlimited data compared to 130$USD /year for 2TB with Dropbox...
interesting
- I just sent myself a planned email for June 2021 when my Dropbox expire to, maybe, switch to Backblaze. I would save money.Bennn
- Bennn0
Can you put Torrented movies and such on Backblaze? Pirated softwares, etc. ?? Asking for a friend.
- How would they know it was pirated? It's an encrypted backup. The service generates file checksums to prevent duplication, but otherwise it's private data.evilpeacock
- Bennn0
wow...ok!
Go read the reviews of Backblaze on Trustpilot, they got 2 start out of 5 :
https://www.trustpilot.com/revie…
Seems like a major issue here, if your computer if turned off for too long, they automatically delete all your files! Horror stories over on Trustpilot.
- the comments on that page just made me change my mind. I'll stick to Dropbox.
thanks. thats all for me.Bennn - Every complaint I read wasn't more on user error than BB; You can pay for 1 year or unlimited if the 30 day snapshot is an issue.evilpeacock
- The commenter who had a backup freeze must not have been getting notification emails from the service.evilpeacock
- The guy who had his account "hacked" and was locked out must not have used 2FA, which is ridiculous for an off-site backup.evilpeacock
- the comments on that page just made me change my mind. I'll stick to Dropbox.

Use Arq as a middle man. Really affordable 1 time purchase.
- It can simultaneously backup to multiple locations and encrypt those backups.
- It can integrate with all the major services.
- I push to a local HD and then Dropbox
- You can specify the backup intervals and bandwidth etc.- seems silly to have a middle man for this, no? not meant as a diss, just wondering why you don't just go through one of the major providers. what's the benefit?lvl_13
- other than the fact that they can push data to multiple platforms at once? i think i just answered my own question. :Dlvl_13
- Plus you can customize each backup. Security wise, the files are encrypted on your side - rather than on arrival with other services.Centigrade
