Revealed: almost everyone in Europe is breathing toxic air
Guardian investigation finds 98% of Europeans breathing highly damaging polluted air linked to 400,000 deaths a yearEurope is facing a “severe public health crisis”, with almost everyone across the continent living in areas with dangerous levels of air pollution, an investigation by the Guardian has found.
Analysis of data gathered using cutting-edge methodology – including detailed satellite images and measurements from more than 1,400 ground monitoring stations – reveals a dire picture of dirty air, with 98% of people living in areas with highly damaging fine particulate pollution that exceed World Health Organization guidelines. Almost two-thirds live in areas where air quality is more than double the WHO’s guidelines.
The worst hit country in Europe is North Macedonia. Almost two-thirds of people across the country live in areas with more than four times the WHO guidelines for PM2.5, while four areas were found to have air pollution almost six times the figure, including in its capital, Skopje.

How Europe became the Wild West of spyware
Forget the EU’s reputation as a global tech enforcer. For surveillance companies, it’s a place where anything goes.BRUSSELS — The spyware deployed against Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, was made and marketed by a European company.
A link sent to Metsola as a reply to a post on X was designed to infect the device of anyone who clicked on it with Predator surveillance software.
Predator is produced and sold by the Intellexa alliance, a collection of surveillance technology firms controlled by a holding company based in Ireland, according to a report by Amnesty International, which uncovered the attempted hack. It allows an attacker to gain full access to victim devices, including microphones, cameras, text messages, and apps. Similar links were sent to the Commission’s official account and to the account of Emily Haber, the former German ambassador to the United States.
“We didn’t click on it, and we reported it immediately,” Metsola said. “My phone is clean.” She said she believed the hacking attempt was related to a fisheries dispute between the EU and Vietnam.

"Russia to build two nuclear reactors in Hungary"
"Russian nuclear power giant Rosatom will begin constructing two new nuclear reactors in Hungary in the coming weeks, Hungary's foreign minister said.
The deal, reached between Russia and the EU state in 2014, aims to expand the existing Paks nuclear plant.
Russia's nuclear industry has not been subjected to EU sanctions over its bloody invasion of Ukraine.
Moves to isolate and sanction its oil and gas exports have not been unconditionally supported by Hungary.
The Paks site currently generates 40% of Hungary's electricity supply.
"Let the construction begin!" said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in a Facebook post.
With the additional two reactors, the nuclear power station - currently made up of four Soviet-built reactors - will see its capacity more than double.
"This is a big step, an important milestone," Mr Szijjarto said in a Facebook post quoted by AFP news agency.
"In this manner we will ensure Hungary's energy security in the long term and protect Hungarians from wild swings in energy prices."
He added that the nuclear reactors could be ready for service by 2030.
The controversial €12.5bn (£10.6bn; $12.4bn) project is largely financed by Russia."
- So stupid. France now, and Britain historically were (are, in the case of France) nuclear energy super powers.
We've squandered a decade and more.Nairn - I just hope that small scale modular nuclear plants get fast-tracked. A decade too late for the clusterfuck Europe is going to face in a short few months time..Nairn
