you can do it yourself but prepare for some frustrations! sometimes it might be good to have someone 'break' in the dog for you for a little bit but make sure you keep the same training regiment and format, style, commands etc as to notconfuse the dog and make it harder on you both.

i guess since you are a bitch, you should get a male dog....
- i also vote Labrador Retriever. I love Weimeriners, but they are touchy breed. and if you have cats, say goodbye to fluffy...madirish
- labs rule.madirish
- bumping again for labsmadirish
- < what he saidmadirish
- labs will destroy your modern looking pad though, they love to chew & destroyradar
- i actually 100% disagree. this, like 95% of all behavior is dependant on how the dog is raised, and how quickly the alpha is established, and reinforced.madirish
- dammit.
reinforced. our lab has destroyed zero things in our place. seriously.madirish - I lub labs. We've had a few in the family over the years. Sincerely, the Bitchjox
- i love me some bitches.
signed,
SFmadirish - true mad, i had 2 growing up, but they were outside dogs - everyone i've seen raising pups indoors tend to go through couchesradar
- ...couches thoughradar
- i hear you dude. ours has done nothing of the sort. he is also with me or someone 14 hours/day.madirish

PT Serra da Estrela is a big mountain dog with a nice and friendly character - especially with children. Also a great defender of his territory - the sheer size of the dog gets you a clearence of 5m radius when you're strolling ;)

Huskies rock. Of course, if you don't want a big, furry, bundle of endless energy, they may not be the best choice.
- Huskies are great dogs but the shedding factor is a formidable challenge. Forget having clean house or clothes ever again.monkeyshine

I had a rottie for awhile.. great dog.. A dog for protection is a bad idea.. I was always scared of the dog as a liability. I was screwed if that dog bit somebody.. they sue the hell out of me.. my dog actually hurt somebody.. my dog will also get put to sleep for attacking somebody.. oh yeah.. good luck getting insurance.. we tried to change our homeowners and they found out we had a rottie... nobody would give us insurance.. we have a english bulldog.. she is good city dog.. they don't need much exercise.. people are still scared of them.. not sure why.. they are very nice dogs.. stupid.. at least ours is.. you really understand the "bull headed" saying after owning one..
- That's crazy. I see what you mean, although I'd rather deal with a lawsuit than a home invasion...jox

Do you live in the city or the the countryside? that may be a big factor of choice.
- In a (gated) house in the suburb so the dog could easily run free! :)jox
- good! Imo you should go for a shepherd breed if you have space. Guard-dogs or Water/Hunting dogs can be an headache coz they are much more active and more territorial.Witt
- ... headache, since they are much more active and territorial.Witt

I don;t have on, but a friend has a boxer - that's a good all around dog, smart, friendly, protective.
I have a Cane Corso, which is not at all recommended for first time owners. But she is a kick ass dog none the less, just a little crazy.
You can train on your own, but I would suggest taking it to puppy class especially if this is your first dog.
- man... that's "don't have onE"flashbender
- Cane Corsos are awesomePoint5
- Yeah, I get asked what she is on more than half the walks we take... people are smittten with her 'cuz she's so awesomeflashbender

this is my buddy. I picked him up from a brutalizing farmer. He's mix Labrador with the loose Pt Mountain dog (usually large breeds shepherds mix; rule is mixing any big dog with another for Guard/Hunting) I had a lot of troubles with him. He's very strong, troublesome with other dogs, and can run in front of my car at 30km/h for 30 minutes... Crazy mofo. In fact I don't have an outdoor picture of him standing still and I need to look for mountain tops to unleashed this crazy beast. On the other hand, he has an exceptional character. Keeping this dog in a city would be crime:

- Also, greyhounds need rescuing from racetracks after they finish racing at about 3-4 years otherwise a huge number are simply put down by their owners who have no further use for them.jamble
- ahahah! nice looking chaps. lovely :PWitt
- This is a great idea. Planning on rescuing Greyhounds for my next pet.flashbender
- you call "greyhounds" to lost hunting-dogs, right?Witt
- hmm, upon research i see it's a specific breed, sorry. Had no clue. I was hoping it was a natural sort. as you were.Witt
- so those are race-dogs?Witt
