The news about us filming The Hobbit at 48 frames per second generated a lot of comments. Of course, it's impossible to show you what 48 fps actually looks like outside of a movie cinema, but there were several interesting and insightful questions raised.
We will be completing a "normal" 24 frames per second version—in both digital and 35mm film prints. If we are able to get the Hobbit projected at 48 fps in selected cinemas, there will still be normal-looking 24 fps versions available in cinemas everywhere.
Converting a film shot at 48 fps down to 24 fps is not a hugely difficult process, but it requires testing to achieve the best results. Some of this involves digital processes during post-production. We are also shooting the film a slightly different way, which is a question several of you asked. Normally you shoot a movie with a 180-degree shutter angle. Changing the shutter angle affects the amount of motion blur captured during movement. Reducing the shutter angle gives you the stroby (or jerky) "Saving Private Ryan" look.
However, we're going the other way, shooting at 48 fps with a 270 degree shutter angle. This gives the 48 fps a lovely silky look, and creates a very pleasing look at 24 fps as well. In fact, our DP, Andrew Lesnie, and I prefer the look of 24 fps when it comes from a 48 fps master.
More soon ....

Apparently they wrapped shooting yesterday. Now they only have a few months to finish all the CGI. Feel bad for those fuckers working nights and weekends.

Looks like this is actually going to be 3 movies now rather than 2.
- they should just try and make one really good one. who cares if its 3 hours long, just one stupid movie is enough.uuuuuu
- Yeah Im sure all 3 will be terrible just like all of the LOTRs were some of the worst movies ever.CygnusZero4
- i think thats sarcasm... the hobbit isn't 3 parts, why even have two? one good hobbit movie would be great but no.uuuuuu
- Do you realize how much story they're trying to squeeze into 6-8 hours? A hell of a lot.CygnusZero4
- you could do it in 2 1/2 hoursuuuuuu

He added back story and other related info from the various Tolkien appendices. 125 pages worth of lore that is part of the story but not directly in the Hobbit book. I am sure two, 2ish hour movies would have been fine, but the studios likely wanted more money and said three normal length movies would be great. Please, as we have no original ideas and can only makes movies about old books and comics.

They could have easily made LOTR into 10 movies - $$$. I bet they are kicking themselves right now:)

It's obvious they're adding a bunch to the story. Hobbit is only around 300 pages long, shorter than Fellowship of the Ring. For them to turn that into 3 movies, they must be adding their own story elements. I'm not going to say anything about it until I see it.
- Tolkien nuts are probably throwing a fit.CygnusZero4
- But adding from Tolkien material. That is an important distinction.ETM

Although I won't say anything until I see them, Peter Jackson has earned my lack of skepticism and prejudice.

hope we get some gollum out takes after the credits

The 3rd film will be 2.5 hours of Smaug sleeping in 3D. I'll still watch.

maybe some stuff from the similarion?
- 30 movies of materialukit2
- during the last comicon Peter Jackson was asked this same question and advised-e-pill
- the Tolkien family do not like the movie adaptations at all and wont release right to it.e-pill

I'm still holding out for The Children of Hurin. I see that one being darker than any of the Middle Earth movies thus far. Or maybe the story of Beren and Luthien. A pre- dark-lord Sauron as a werebat? I'll buy that ticket.

Or maybe Akallabeth, the downfall of Numenor... OK now I'm revealing the pointiness of my ears.

I think I read somewhere JRR Tolkein's son hated the movie adaptations so he won't license any more of the books.
- Until he needs a 5th mansion somewhere.dopepope
- it was announced in the last comicon that the Tolkien family hate the movie adaptations..e-pill
- and that the other stories written by JRR will not be given away to be made.e-pill
- Idiots. Do they really think better versions of those books could be made? They were faithful to the books.CygnusZero4

I find it interesting that they are quite willing to turn their backs on a generation who will probably not have read said books (or even know about them for that matter), just because they don't like the way it is adapted. I know for a fact that when the LOTR films came out there was a massive resurgence in the popularity of the original books - is that really a bad thing? There is also the obvious thing about royalities ie they'd make a fuck tonne, but I guess they are pretty well off regardless...

Given that they had to sue the studios to get the royalties that were properly owed to them for LOTR movies, I am sure there is a taste of ashes in their mouth about any and all of it.http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/tv/s…
This was one of the issues that held up the Hobbit from being made sooner.
