cheaper, yes, but all that money going into it doesn't account for the engineers it needs to send people to Mars AND this mission of the SE. I agree, it's cheaper, but money can't buy you the best minds all at once. I've been told (by a no-know it all professor in one of my engineering classes) that we can't do both, pay for the smartest people in the country to tackle two giant problems. I pick Mars over replacing the shuttle with slightly unproven ideas.
