Your employer is going to take it personally if you go out looking for a job if he thinks everything is fine, because A. he probably is not aware that you feel you want more and B. If you get the job and they want you to start right away - he will assume that you will leave him hanging and C. he is gonna think - how long has this guy been on the fence just going thru the motions, looking for something better.
i never understood it until i started employing people who turned out to be ungrateful pricks.
