Interviewing w/ Competitors

So I'm thinking of leaving my employer for another, better, position at a competitor. I've already been interviewing and things are going well.
Thing is, my boss now, is a complete freak on even hearing the name of our competition being mentioned. "Loyalty" is EVERYHTING to him. Total cutthroat personality.
I've got a feeling that word about my interview is gonna get back to him, and i'm just wondering what to say when he calls me in his office for this.
Anyone ever been in a situation similar to this? What kind of strategy have you used, things you've said to kind of defend yourself in this situation.
Point is, i want to keep my current job for now, all the while setting up for my jump, but doing some damage control if necessary.
Thanks NT!

lol baskerviIle!
it's always good to have a backup plan.
if your boss does find out and he calls you into his office first and foremost thank him for coming to you first and asking you about it rather than jumping to conclusions about you supposedly looking around.
if he's cut throat i don't know if you really want to be honest with him about you looking around, he might can you on the spot.
good luck with your search.

just wait till your boss starts a thread about you going on interviews with the competition!!
:)

I'd say that if he does call you in for that reason you should take it very objectively and explains your reasons and in smoother words tell him that a job is a job and you're basically getting a better one.
Plan B. Deny everything and start smuggling office supplies.

what ever you do, don't tell the internet.

back up your files on disk, floppy, and ipod. print out your hard drive...hand i n your resignation with the competitors stationary.

check your contract incase of a non-compete... that could tangle things up.
loyalty, schmoyalty. If you're not being fairly compensated at your current job, how loyal are they to YOU?
- pyeaton0
check for a non-comp, and leave. business is business.
Good luck!

wtf? non-compete? whats this?
damn!! i knew i should've read the whole packet when i signed on.....

Your employer is going to take it personally if you go out looking for a job if he thinks everything is fine, because A. he probably is not aware that you feel you want more and B. If you get the job and they want you to start right away - he will assume that you will leave him hanging and C. he is gonna think - how long has this guy been on the fence just going thru the motions, looking for something better.
i never understood it until i started employing people who turned out to be ungrateful pricks.

hahaha baskerville!
you are dangerously overdue for a report on the results of that little 'mill' debacle.
Kidding, don't tell us.
TELL US.
