    its the client/audience who should be the decider on the resolution.
    you should gather info though to help them make their decision

    it is true that these days more people have 1024 rather than 800 and like someone said, this is increasing each day as all new comps have higher spec.

    ask the client to see their web stats and youl be able to tell them what most of their current viewers use.
    or just look at other sites/web stats for your proof.

    most sites these days are going for 900(ish) pixels wide, big corps like the BBC etc have went that way.

    one solution is to put something "not as important" down the right side of the page. so if youve designed it 900 wide and the person only has 800 then they aint missing much - maybe just a bit of an image - as long as they arent losing the subnavigation or anything
