I pretty much build most of my websites to fit into 800 x 600 screens, anyone think this is an old fashioned guideline and should rock out sites at 1024 x 768?
what do you people work to?
I mostly design with CF & CSS

like with most all design solutions, this is best decided based on audience. i do day though, 1024 is not a problem for majority of users and is growing more and more everyday.
some sites just feel great at 8x6.

also, how is the demise of CF treating you?
j/k
;)actually, are they legacy apps you are building off of, or fresh code?

Depends on your target audience. I know it's a dull response but that is what I base mine on.

depends, are u doing it 300dpi?

I'm no expert but like madirish said, there are more users with using 1024x res on their monitors. Here we have a few old ibm machines with old ass monitors and they too are at 1024x

i think its safe to do 1024.

I was sort of thinking toward going to 1024, but obviously I cant go on one set of statistics.
after looking at some of our clients web stats its all looking very similar with 50% of users having 1024 res, and 10-15% having 800x600 (with anything less not even worth looking at) across the board.
I just don't know if its worth neglecting that size of margin...
again it all comes down to target audience.any thoughts?

i try to make all 100% with 1024 as a minimum. i have 5-10% of 8x6 users throughout my sites.
if you do block designs you can put ads or some less important stuff in the right column for 8x6 users ...

Fuck the audience.
I make my sites for 3200 x 2400, for dual screens only bitches!

I always figured that 800 x 600 users would be used to having to scroll both ways so why buck the trend?

its the client/audience who should be the decider on the resolution.
you should gather info though to help them make their decisionit is true that these days more people have 1024 rather than 800 and like someone said, this is increasing each day as all new comps have higher spec.
ask the client to see their web stats and youl be able to tell them what most of their current viewers use.
or just look at other sites/web stats for your proof.most sites these days are going for 900(ish) pixels wide, big corps like the BBC etc have went that way.
one solution is to put something "not as important" down the right side of the page. so if youve designed it 900 wide and the person only has 800 then they aint missing much - maybe just a bit of an image - as long as they arent losing the subnavigation or anything
