    There's no real one-trick technique, but gradient choice will make or break the piece

    You need to think how the light would hit the surface, and what the surface would be reflecting in the environment.

    so if you've got a beveled edge, edges facing your light source will be bright, edges facing away will be dark.

    If the letters are on a white floor, they may get a soft reflection from the bounce light. etc.

    grab a bunch of reference for real life metal that looks like you want, then try to break down what's causing it to look like metal.
