gradients.

(Sep 26 07, 12:50)Tried a bunch of different things w/ gradients and it just isn't cutting it. I made one gradient over the logo, copied the shape, added a stroke and expanded that shape. Added another gradient. Did the same thing again with a thinner shape over top to get a beveled edge on the letters, somewhat like in the Bosch symbol.
It still looks like it was done in Illustrator. I want photo-realism or damn near close. Any specific tips or tutorials you people may have come across???

doesn't brooke have some tutorial or something having to do with photorealism using vector apps?
oh yeah:

not metal, but might put you closer

you could tweak this one too:

This without the reflection?

looks just like using gradients though - so if you already tried that...

depends on the logo.. some things just work really well all beveled and bling.
the metal effect on that Bosch example is just really simple, smart use of gradients.
maybe try your logo first with a few of the photoshop effects and if you find something you like try to recreate in vectors.

Get your mesh on!!

There's no real one-trick technique, but gradient choice will make or break the piece
You need to think how the light would hit the surface, and what the surface would be reflecting in the environment.
so if you've got a beveled edge, edges facing your light source will be bright, edges facing away will be dark.
If the letters are on a white floor, they may get a soft reflection from the bounce light. etc.
grab a bunch of reference for real life metal that looks like you want, then try to break down what's causing it to look like metal.
