CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access. One of the newer digital technologies in use in Canada, the US, Australia, and some southeastern Asian countries (e.g. Hong Kong and South Korea). CDMA differs from GSM and TDMA by its use of spread spectrum techniques for transmitting voice or data over the air. Rather than dividing the radio frequency spectrum into separate user channels by frequency slices or time slots, spread spectrum technology separates users by assigning them digital codes within the same broad spectrum. Advantages of CDMA include higher user capacity and immunity from interference by other signals. Available in either 800 or 1900 MHz frequencies.

Virgin Mobile phones don't cost that much. Their selection sucks, but sometimes you can find good deals. Maybe they believe that most of the people who use pay-as-you-go don't care about having fancy phones? Or there isn't a large enough demand for them.

I'm using a pay-as-you-go plan with them right now, and it's going well. But you have a good question. I want to know about this as well, since my ideal situation would be to buy whatever phone I want and use it with Virgin Mobile. I don't think it's possible right now, but I could be wrong.

    • are VM phones CDMA? why not get an unlocked one on ebay or the like, and use it? do they take SIM cards?madirish
    • VM won't let you use an unlocked CDMA phone, they'll only activate on new phones you buy from them.i_monk
