... wants me to buy a new phone if I want to go pay-as-you-go with them, but my old phone is CDMA (I think I just have to unlock it) so it should work on their CDMA network, right? Anyone else gone through this?

just off hand, why *wouldn't* you want a new mobile device? they will probably give you one for nothing in any event...

I have a perfectly good working phone, albeit a few years out of date. Why should I *have* to buy a new phone when I don't plan on downloading internets and taking pictures and all that crap? I don't like using the phone, and the cost of texting in Canada is preposterous, so it's really just for the sake of having a number where I can be reached at night and on weekends.
- just get a land line instead. or a morse code station ;)menos

CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access. One of the newer digital technologies in use in Canada, the US, Australia, and some southeastern Asian countries (e.g. Hong Kong and South Korea). CDMA differs from GSM and TDMA by its use of spread spectrum techniques for transmitting voice or data over the air. Rather than dividing the radio frequency spectrum into separate user channels by frequency slices or time slots, spread spectrum technology separates users by assigning them digital codes within the same broad spectrum. Advantages of CDMA include higher user capacity and immunity from interference by other signals. Available in either 800 or 1900 MHz frequencies.

Virgin Mobile phones don't cost that much. Their selection sucks, but sometimes you can find good deals. Maybe they believe that most of the people who use pay-as-you-go don't care about having fancy phones? Or there isn't a large enough demand for them.
I'm using a pay-as-you-go plan with them right now, and it's going well. But you have a good question. I want to know about this as well, since my ideal situation would be to buy whatever phone I want and use it with Virgin Mobile. I don't think it's possible right now, but I could be wrong.

I ended up going with Virgin and buying their cheapest phone. The guy I talked to at T Booth in the Eaton Centre said there's no technical reason Virgin couldn't support unlocked (or whatever) CDMA phones, they just really really want your money.
I looked into Telus and Yak and Solo, but their no contract deals were no better and their phones were way too expensive for what I need.

I got a nice phone cause of a 2 year contract 4 months later I was drunk running away from the pizza man as I had stolen a peace of pizza. The phone fell out of my pocket never to be seen again. Karma I guess but from then on I've vowed to never get a fancy phone again.
My gf however just got an HTC Touch, and 3 people I work with have one the geek in me def wants one to play with haha.

I love my $49 phone with no plan and $10 a month bill. Cheapest phone out there.
I refuse to sign a 3 year contract and pay $50 a month for shit.
