But kello, keep in mind that there are charlatans and true devotees running around under the same banner. It's been this way for centuries. I have never, ever heard of the true gospel—the one that's all about unconditional love, grace, forgiveness, treating others with respect and kindness, and truth—having an adverse effect on any civilization. Yeah, the Crusades were launched in the name of Christ; yeah, the Salem witch hunts were instigated by Puritans who went berserk; yeah, Jerry Falwell and Bob Jones have made the rest of the Christian world look like legalistic assholes—but the truth is that Christ and his message have never had anything to do with torture, death, war, poverty or oppression. It is PEOPLE and their own twistings of the Bible's message who have produced travesties like David Koresh and the worst, Hitler.
