i use both.
if you've got no time and fuck all budget motion is great. if you have the time and budget is a little more then AE is the way to go. personally i like having both in the arsenal, it makes it easier to offer services to a range of clients.
if you are going to start from scratch though and you want to really do something worthwhile then go with AE. you'll have much more to offer clients / studios and you can always take a look at motion down the line if you really want to.
the analogy from benr0ck above is pretty spot on.
