I can't seem to find a demo for Motion on the Apple site, so...
Has anyone used this program, and can compare it to After Effects?

i barely scratched the surface of a Motion tutorial, but, having used AFX for a couple of years, felt like i was working with mittens on. i didn't feel like i had as much tweakability as i do in AFX. But again, i gave up before really getting into it.

I occasionally use Motion 2. There are a few situations where Motion's interface is a little more efficient than AE. Mostly for quicky projects. My overall impression is that you just don't have as much precise control (like what locustsloth said ^)
The keyframe editor could be a lot more user-friendly. Maybe Motion 3 addressed that. It also tends to crash more than AE CS3, at least on my machine.
It's usable, but doesn't really challenge AE.
My two cents. Hope I've helped.

if you're thinking about learning one of the over, learn AE.

I use After Effects, but occasionally someone will start raving about Apple Motion... typically I've noticed it's when they don't have a great deal of in-depth knowledge about After Effects, so I was wondering if it was more intuitive or something.
I usually say that AE is the industry standard, and get the response that some people prefer Motion... but I've not met any!

I think Motion might be a bit easier to use for those that have a background of video editing in final cut.
After effects is more friendly if you come from photoshop/ illustrator background, like most people only peeked a bit of motion a while ago, great for particles and quick effects, but I dont remember seeing camera controls or 3d layers, interface is very very nice though.
The fact that is darker is easier on the eyes when working for extended periods of time, after effects has an option for making the interface a bit darker but not that much. I cant wait till they add that to photoshop illustrator
- Apparently Motion 3 has 3d layers... some things look similar to AESigDesign
- Even having used Final Cut since V2, long before i really understood PSD, i like AE betterlocustsloth

Some interesting videos... looks like it simplifies some things, which can be good or bad

looks like AE with training wheels
- Yeah, that's what I was thinking...SigDesign

Motion is good for a few things, and I much prefer the easing bezier curves to AE. Good for mockups because its all real time, but because its all real time you are kinda limited by the power of your computer.
AE is much much much much more powerful, and worth learning because its useful for static graphics too.

i use both.
if you've got no time and fuck all budget motion is great. if you have the time and budget is a little more then AE is the way to go. personally i like having both in the arsenal, it makes it easier to offer services to a range of clients.
if you are going to start from scratch though and you want to really do something worthwhile then go with AE. you'll have much more to offer clients / studios and you can always take a look at motion down the line if you really want to.
the analogy from benr0ck above is pretty spot on.

I use AE all day. So glad I don't have to use Motion. Someone above compared it to working with mittens on. Too true.

AE for sure
